I have searched the board over and over and I cannot find this out.

What is a slip on exhaust, how do you install one?

are they any good?

Thanks

A slip-on is an exhaust cannister (muffler) designed to "slip-on" the remains of the stock exhaust header after you cut off the original muffler.  Some exhaust systems are designed with the header pipes, collector (part where the individual header pipes come together) and muffler are all separate parts that can be replaced indivisually.  Others, like the GS 500 come from the factory with everything welded together.

Only a few manufacturers make exhausts for our bike. Cobra makes a couple slip-on mufflers that fit and Vance & Hines makes a complete system.  If you know how to weld you can probably adapt most any sportbike muffler, or even a car muffler, to fit the GS

Assuming that the slip-on is less restrictive than the stock muffler it will reduce back-pressure and should increase full throttle power if you get the jetting right.  On the GS the restrictions in the fuel air path (from lowest cost to improve to more expensive) are: 1. the stock air filter.  Install less restrcitive filter & re-jet to improve power. 2. the stock air box.  Remove and install pod filters & re-jet. (removing the stock airbox requires a much bigger change in jetting than just replacing the stock filter). 3. The exhaust cannister & additional re-jet (install slip-on) 5. head pipes (go for a full system exhaust replacement)4. intake and exhaust ports/valves.

All but the last are fairly cheap to do - head work is rarely worth it if you are not doing it yourself or racing.
