How does a gs500 compare to a ninja250 in terms or power and deliver of power, Is the Gs500 "faster"? How do the HP numbers compare?

johncam4

ive never ridden a ninja but because the displacement is half that of the gs i would say it is slower....the ninja 500 though does have more hp than the gs500...but ive never ridden that one either.....actually ive only ridden my gs so i shouldnt be giving too much advice but oh welll....my input :nana:

I still haven't ridden a 250 Ninja (33hp) or a EX500 Ninja (50hp), but I do know our GS500 makes 39-40hp.

Something to remember is that the 250 Ninja has a 14,000 rpm redline and so the power is probably a little more peakier, like a two-stroke. I do remember reading in Motorcyclist that useable power doesn't start until 4000 rpm (just like our bikes!), but it really peaks up high [in the rpm band].
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

One thing to consider with a smaller displacement bike is the weight of the rider. It may have decent hp but is lacking in torque.

An example is when I was riding a 2-stroke RS125. They put out about 40 hp and no real torque. The jetting was originally setup for a 120 pound rider. Me at 175 was making the bike run hotter. My gf/owner never could comprehend why it was running bad.
Common sense in not very common.

On my buddies dyno, with both bikes full piped and jet kitted,
the EX500 puts out 50-52hp and the GS500 = 45-47hp. Not sure on the 250, never dynoed one.

According to articles online, the 250 makes about 25 HP and 12 pounds of torque.  This compares to the approximate 40 HP and 25 torque of the GS.

I have owned three (3) 250 Ninja's and just recently bought a GS500F.
During my recent buying process I considered a fourth Ninja 250, but wanted a bike with more mid range torque and power, plus I really like the new 04 models looks.  The 250 Ninga is a great bike for a "250", handles very well, 50-70mpg, and pretty potent for a 250.  You have to
rev through the powerband or make sure your in the right gear/rpm range for what you want to do.

My seat of the pants comparison (I'm still breaking in the GS/F upto 5k rpm) is what i expected GS pulls stronger lower rpm/gears and IS faster.

Its not a fair comparison as their both really great bikes, it just depends on what you want to do.  I have ridden the 250 over 500 miles in one day cruising up I-75 and back from Tampa to Jax.

Thankss guys, my previous bike was a ninja 250, and I am seriously considering getting a Gs500, but I will want to add clip ons and new rearsets for a more aggresive bike

My First bike was an 89 VTR 250.  Very similar to a EX250.
Suposedly makes 32HP.

I'm 6'2, 230LBS.

My VTR was hating life with me on it, had to have a shop beef up the rear shock.  However.  The bike topped out with me on it at about 90, and that wa with me tucked in behind the widnscreen.

My GS has had be on it doing 80, and the GS had a lot of pull left.

Short version:

250, very fast revving and perky, no "pull" (torque)
GS500 not as perky, but far more pull.

I don't know about a hemi... maybe a V6 that can rev over 11k :dunno:
