I mean the two holes in the frame on the right side of the bike - looks like a plate went there or was ment to go there.  Don't know if it was for something but had me curious for a while now.

JakeD-getting your nipple pierced is not crazy. Killing a drifter to get an errection? Now that's crazy!

Your Chassis No etc, on a plate which ALL bikes should have (not sure but should be by law!) either its fallen off (doubtful as its rivetted on) or someones redone (sprayed or powdercoated) the frame which should be put back on! Also check that the bike hasnt previously been nicked as they would obviously remove it to change identity. Well now ya know but dont know how ya could get another (maybe through suzuki?) But im definitely right as it was that plate riveted on which has likely to have been purposely drilled off.

Nah, I've got the plate on the opposite side.  That's what I find weird - looks as if there was supposed to be something there but was never put on.

Drag eh?  I'm gonna call  :bs: on that one.     Doesn't anybody else's bike have this?  Mine's a '98.

Did the bike have a previous owner?  Maybe he had something on there and removed it?  They're not there from the factory.

i have those same two holes on the right side of my bike. Thing is though, they are not holes, little metal stubs, not screws but in the same place where the holes are on yours. Mine is a 1996.

My '99 has those holes on the right side of the frame too - only they've got rivet heads in 'em.  I can't find my Haynes manual right now, but it seems like there's a picture towards the beginning that shows the VIN plate riveted on the right side.  It's in the section that talks about which suffix letters are used for each model year, and so forth.

IF I'm remembering that photo correctly, I'll bet that it shows an early-model bike.  Perhaps regulations changed over time, because it would be too easy to remove/switch the plate.

The VIN information on the left side of my '99 is on a sticker, not a riveted-on plate.   Maybe the technology to print stickers with incremental numbers superceded the (more-costly?) stamped-and-riveted-plate method?

My 96 has the same holes with the data plate mounted on the other side.  Someone else asked me why those were there and I told him they were a weight reduction technique.

Kerry, mine is the same - sticker on the opposite side.  This seems like the most logical explanation.  Good work!

My TLR has those (rivets & no plate) in the frame as well. Probably something to do with another market area. Give me a little bit and I will be back with an answer.
Common sense in not very common.

In Europe the GS comes with the identity plate on the right side. Mine is a GM51A, unlike the GM51B that is common in Germany, but still has the plate on the right.

They have an id plate there for the bikes in Australia as well.

Thanks for the pic Andre, that's what I figured must go there (different market).  What year is your bike?
