Air Filter question

I just bought an '04 GS500F and they're not making either K&N or Uni filters for it yet.  Does anyone know if a filter from an earlier GS500 say an E model will work.  I think they're pretty much the same bike.  Also, what is your preferance K&N or Uni?

If you can find the Suzuki part number for the '04 stock filter, compare it to the number in the Ron Ayers column in this post.  If it's the same, then filters for the E and K* models will work fine.

I think my preference kinda shows through in my 2 posts in that message thread (Oil).

PS - If you're looking for a pod-style filter to combine with larger jets and a more free-flowing exhaust, I haven't compiled any sources or prices for those yet; only for the in-airbox stock replacement filters.

I just installed a Kand N filter in my 500F. I just ordered the latest model they had ( I think 02 500E) and it fits perfectly.

I want to clean or replace my filter but could not budge the gas tank because the lines were tight.  Does the gas tank slide back?  I can't figure out how to get to my air filter.  I am a noob and just bought a used gs500.  I do have the clymer manual, but I do not find the gas tank removal to be that great of an instruction.  And yes I did unbolt the 2 that hold the gas tank on.  It has 9500 miles on it.  Can someone help?

You MUST slide the gas tank back before you can lift it above the frame.  There is a kind of sideways U-channel welded to the underside of the tank (in front) which fits around a crosspiece on the frame.  (If you kneel down and crane your neck just so, you can see what I'm talking about.)

It's certainly possible to get at the air filter without removing the tank, but your arm can sure get tired from holding the rear end of the tank up, especially if it's full.    If your hoses are long enough you can actually rotate the tank a bit and rest it on the frame.  But if you're dead set against removing the hoses, get a friend to help hold the tank up!

If you DO want to tackle the hoses, see my recent post.  Removing the tank is good practice for later procedures (carb cleaning, carb synch, valve clearance check, etc.)
