I just purchased a 2000 gs500 (no mods), and when the fuel valve is set to either Reserve or Prime, the fuel valve leaks (gas drips straight down from the valve)....when its set to ON, it doesnt appear to leak...

Has anybody experienced this before?  Is it a matter of just replacing the fuel valve with another one? Anybody recommend a place on line to order a fuel valve?

Thanks...

Kerry

On both the RES and the PRI settings, the fuel comes from the RES fuel hose.  It is the hose that connects to the front outlet on the tank-mounted petcock and the rear inlet on the frame-mounted petcock.

I'll bet that the hose wasn't fitted very tightly the last time it was off.  Start at the hose clamp(s).  If getting everything tight doesn't fix the problem then you could either source another petcock or consider bypassing it altogether.  (We can send you to some past threads on the topic.)

Umm... Kerry, if it were the RES/PRI hose leaking, it would leak all the time, as both hoses constantly get fuel. The problem must be somewhere behind the RES/PRI shutoff chicken. Looks as if the petcock is shot.

well, thanks for the responses....the hoses do look fine (and this is a gs500 with 1100 miles on the clock)....does anybody know if the petcock is rebuildable? everywhere ive checked a new one will cost around $60....

I have the one from the tank if that is what you need, but I do not have the valve that attaches to the frame.
Dude, what does mine say?  Sweet!  What about mine?

Looks like dgyver still has a frame-mounted petcock from the bike he is parting out.  He's asking $10.  See the first post in the
Parting out 94 GS500 thread.
