Okay, so, I've managed to *LOSE* my set of keys, which had my only GS Key.

Two questions:

1.)  could someone PM me on how I can "hot wire" my GS?

2.) can you clean the carb jets w/o removing the entire carb assembly?

I have had *THE* worst summer so far with vehicle problems.   I wont even get into it, but  obviously I can't get my GS running w/o my key, and I need to get it running so I can make it to work.

Found out from the dealer it's gonna be about $300 for a new ignition cylinder and gas cap.   A locksmith thought it may be possible to make me a key, but it's $100 for him to even look at the bike. :-(

If..... perhaps someone is parting out a GS, and has an ignition cylinder and gas cap (along with the key)  please let me know.....

Thanks!

I haven't ever hot-wired anything, but according to the Haynes wiring diagram ...

... turning the key to the ON position connects the Red wire to the Orange wire, and the Grey to the Brown.  (In fact, if you follow the wires around the diagram, you'll see that the Orange and Grey wires are effectively always connected together.  Further, if it weren't for the Park position needing to turn on the tailight and nothing else, the Brown wire would be part of the same bundle.

In other words, you could join the Orange, Grey and Brown wires into a "permanent" bundle and then just figure out a switch to connect the Red wire into it when you want to turn the bike on.  Shoot, if you wanna be Mr. Stealth Bike just leave the Grey and Brown wires out of it - they seem to power nothing but lights.  (See the full-blown Haynes wiring diagram.)

You can certainly run a carb cleaner additive through a tank of gas or two.

But if you mean "can you get the jets out without removing...."  Hmmm.  Maybe if you had some special-purpose, right-angle Phillips-head screwdrivers.  The problem is getting access to the screws that hold the float bowls on the bottom of the carbs.  Once the bowls are off, the jets are "right there".

I think it was Srinath that suggested replacing the Phillips-head screws with matching Allen screws after you've taken the carbs off the first time.  Then you should be able to remove the float bowls in the future using Allen wrenches, without pulling the carbs.

I know this isn't a complete solution, but you might think about an aftermarket ignition key.  Here is part of a page that I scanned from the 2002 Dennis Kirk manual a couple years back:

I keep hearing that locksmiths can rekey your existing locks to match a given key.  You don't have your original key, but maybe they could use the key from this aftermarket jobbie?   :dunno:  Or maybe they could just pick ANY old key pattern and rekey all 3?  (That's the $100+ job though, right?)  Surely there's a Mom-and-Pop shop around there somewhere that could help you out without reaming you?  Then again, it IS your own fault....

I tried removing the float bowl screws with a right angle screw driver but they were a little too snug and I did not have enough leverage to get them undone without stripping out the cross recess.

Good idea on the socket head cap screws for next time.

remove the top tripple clamp and take it to a locksmith.  Usually much cheaper if they can sit down and drink coffee while working.
if the tank is on a different key.....take the tank also

Okay, so it was really, really, really, late last night when I posted....

I forgot one other detail.

How would I go about getting my seat off, so I can access my tank bolts, if I don't have the key for the latch.  I'd hate to break the latch.

Thanks again!

also, even if you hotwire the sucker, it'd be kinda hard to fill it up...

That's nice and all, but Suzuki said they can't cut a new key for the bike.

I think I'm going to e-mail suzuki and see if that's true.

Right now, my allen wrench and a small switch carefully tucked away will have to do the trick.

BTW Kerry, about the carb.   one of my pilot jets was blocked.

Think that would have kept her from running on both cylinders?

Are you saying that you got the seat and tank off?   :thumb:

It certainly could have prevented the one cylinder from "firing" at idle.  I can't remember ... did you say it kicked in at higher throttle positions?

Oh, and are you also saying that it's running on both cylinders now??
