Goin' thru the oil

I'm new to riding and my li'l GS is my first bike.  I have noticed that since I have started riding it, I seem to go through oil at a rate of about 1/2 litre every 2000km or so.  Does this seem excessive?? My bike is a 2002 and I have put 6000km on it since mid April of this year.

I check my oil weekly or more often if I have gone on a long ride.

That seems normal.  A tad on the higher side but within the norm.
