It's looking good...pics of progress (a bit long)

A few weeks ago I bought a 1992 GS that had been sitting in storage since 1997 and it really needed a LOT of clean-up before it was street-worthy.  Here are the 'before' pics:

My honey is a bike mechanic (owns his own shop), and even though I wanted to do as much of the work as possible myself (learning experience), neither of us had the required time to go through the bike step by step together, so he and his employee double-teamed it over the past week.  My job was to give it the initial wash and to clean the crap off it (pile of nasty chain lube behind the cover, etc.).  Here are the 'during' pics (MAJOR improvements):

Yesterday I received word that it was all back together, the tank is holding fuel nicely (the tank had rust inside it that didn't come quite clean after using the Kreem solution, so I'm still looking for another tank), and Mark (the employee) has already wheelied it in the parking lot, so we're almost good to go!  :lol:

Next is certification, completion of registration and licence plate sticker!  

I'll take more pics of it this weekend and if I find another gas tank I'm going to have the bike painted so once that's done the final 'after' pics will be posted.  Whee!!!

congratulations on getting your new ride!  My GF is currently looking to change careers, sounds like I should try to find a way to nudge her towards becomeing a bike mechanic.

Wow, its starting to come around real good!

How did they get the rust off without ruining any paint on the frame?
I bought my bike a few months ago from someone who had it sitting in a garage for years also and its looking good also, accept for the little spots of rust in the frame

I don't think any of the frame rust was removed - it was just given a wash.  Maybe one day the frame will be powder-coated.

Actually I have talked to one guy who managed to take off the pipe, and the rear inner fender, tank, seat, body pieces, and mask everyhting with tape and news paper... and get in everywhere and sand it with sanding blocks and sponge... and paint it. Turned out really nice... except for some little over spray... which he admitted to being a bit careless. 1 step further... take off the carbs and air box and you can do a real nice job.
