you have to host them yourself and then link...why cant you just attach the pic like other forums ive seen....i think it would add much more to this forum if every one could post pics without all the trouble

dgyver

takes bandwidth to host pics and bandwidth costs $$$.
Common sense in not very common.

Meighan

If anyone ever needs pictures hosted, just let me know - email them to me and I can put them on my web server for you to link to.

How much we talkin about? (I'm not asking you dgyver, just a retorical question)  I bought a clymer manual to support the site and would be willing to donate a little cash too...

I think that feature would enhance this board as well.

well, say you upload a 250k picture. every single time one of us goes in that one thread, and loads that one picture, it takes up 250k of bandwidth. every 4 people is one meg of bandwidth. i know other privately funded forums i belong to sometimes have a cap as low as a half a gig/month of bandwidth. each forum page is what, couple k? but if you're giving away 1 meg per 4 people per picture, that adds up, if you follow me.  8)

oh, not to mention the cost of server space. that picture has to be stored somewhere.

Kerry

Yeah, what perfdrug said.

On June 25th I switched to a new web host for various reasons.  One side benefit is that I can view all of the cool usage statistics.

Guess what?  In less than 4 weeks I have already used 1.38 GB of bandwidth!  :o  Part of that is from me reviewing all of my GStwin-posted images as I change all of the links to point to the new web host.  (Big job!  :x )  But most of the links still pointed to the old webspace until recently, so I'll be interested to see the stats when everything settles down.

Anyway, take perfdrug's word for it -- photos are "expensive" bandwidth-wise and storage-wise.

I dug up some usage numbers from TLPlanet, it was around 80gb per month due to attachments. Most of us have switched over to hosting our own pics or another member has volunteered their web space. This is to keep monthly costs down, even with sponsors & donations. We even get cool raffles too!

Hey I just found out you can upload pics to the Member's Mugs and bike photos in the wall of fame.  No need for hosting there.  I just know you all wanted to see my mug.

Acually there have been some rather nice looking mugs added lately by the tall drink of canadian water.
