not sure what happened to be honest, but my GS ran fine all the way to work, bookin along not a hitch in anything. last few turns for work, and suddenly didnt want to shift right.  played with cable adjustments, when around the block and it is now locked into 1st gear, WILL NOT go into N, or any other gear, the shifter is LOCKED.  i had another engine on the bench that i was going to rebuild, but now its gonna be a quick and dirty make it run temporary crutch engine.  totaly riped it down, checked the bearings (moderatly OK) cut some new gaskets, and setting valve lash while i have it out (need new shims) hopefuly i can get the shims and have it running before work so i dont burn up another 8 hrs Annual leave.   i have a small cheapy digital camera, seems to be working, i will try to take picktures of the teardown of the locked trany.  for now, im going to bed.

ok, im going to attempt to get my really bad quality pix on here,  i was able to fix the issue and not have to swap engines, but ran into other issues that really left me in a bad mood.    3 hours sleep in past 28 hrs has really gotten to me.   recomendations for pix hosting site?

ok, think i got the pix hosting bit with photobucket.  it worked in the test area, now watch me screw it up in main.

this is my flipped tail light

this is the clutch side, cover, and basket removed. Can anyone see the problem? Give you a hint, the shifter would not move.

Yup, Loctite is a good thing when its used.   this screw backed out. i didt my CB shaft bearings awhile back and had the engine apart 3x inside of a week, forgot to use loctite on 3rd round.

this is how it SHOULD look. the shifter arm is now free to move the paw. the lock tite was gone, in a pinch one can use a small dab of RTV silicone.

this is my home made clutch locking tool, pretty simple, these plates were done anyway. the trick however is NOT tightening the 2 bolts holding together the plates. leave them alittle loose to aid aligning.

and as a final shot

this is my home made rear rack mounts,  Sirinath, youve been called out 8) , 1/4 inch plate steel     this will hold 265 lbs.

Somebody get this guy a better camera!  (Or at least make him hold still.   )

I think I understand which screw was loose, but since neither my Haynes nor my Clymer has a photo of quite the same area as your pictures show, I couldn't confirm.  I have not needed to work on the engine or clutch innards -- YET.  But if and when I do, pictures from someone like yourself will be worth their weight ( :? ?) in gold.  Keep snappin' 'em!  :thumb:

Brilliant!

Thanks for reminding me to break out my scanner.  Here is an "equivalent" tool from the Clymer manual (which seems much harder to make and still requires a cast-off clutch plate)...

... and here is one from the Haynes manual.  It doesn't require a spare clutch plate, but:
    * It also seems kinda hard to make
    * It requires 4+
feet of steel bar, so it probably won't fit in a toolbox or small parts bin
* It seems to require both hands to operate (who's going to loosen the clutch hub nut?) but I may be wrong on that.[/list:u]

Looks pretty darn sturdy!  I'd like to see more angles sometime, if you get the chance.  Especially of the rack-to-frame mounting points.

The rust reminds me of the saddlebag rack mounting pieces my brother and I (OK, mostly my brother) made for our 2002 BC trip.  See the pictures on the PREPARATIONS: Fabricating Luggage Racks and Packing page, especially those in the PS section at the end.

[NOTE to the UK-types out there.  No cracks about my brother's name -- how were my parents supposed to know?   :dunno:  Boy was HE ever surprised when he went to Ireland and Scotland as a Mormon missionary!  He learned pretty quick to introduce himself with his last name only....  ]
