well, I finally got my bike re-assembled. It wants to start, and will run for a little while (30sec-1min) @ about 25-50 rpms at full choke and WOT. The only way it will start at all is with WOT.

Initially, I had my hoses hooked up wrong, and had fuel everywhere and soaked my new air filter.

I also dropped my carbs just before reinstalling them.

I rejetted to 40 pilots, 150 mains and 2 #4 washers on the needle. My mixture screws are set to 3 turns out each and I have tried to increase the idle air screw with little success (ran a little better). I also did a rebuild. The little washers near the diaphragm are installed. The needle appears to be seated correctly.

I did some searching and it sounds like carb problems. Could it just be the fuel in the filter causing problems? I have not checked the intake manifold for leaks or the float height yet.

I'm hoping for some suggestions on what else to check. I want to ride again.

For those of you with K&N pods, where do you mount the tank? If memory serves me, it bolts to the airbox. Without the airbox, there is nothing to bolt it to.

Thanks for your help.

I overfilled my bike with oil and it soaked the filter. I didn't let it dry after I cleaned it and expirienced the same thing. Try the filter. Although I wouldn't see gas as causing that much of a problem.

Are you getting any backfires?

Are you sure you're getting spark on both sides?

What do the plugs look like?

After one maintenance I did, I could only run WOT with the fuel petcock on ON (worked fine on RES).  It turned-out that the fuel hoses were a little pinched between the tank and petcock.  I worked them around a bit, until they were slack, which fixed it.

Probably the next thing I'd try, is to use the u-tube method to check gas level, then maybe remove the #4 washers and make sure the slides can slide freely.

The only time I had to use WFO (Wide Full Open; us oldtimers know this one) throttle is when I reinstalled a camchain tensioner without recompressing the spring, so the tension (read: stranglehold) of a fully extended tensioner was forced against the camchain resulting in the engine only being able to run WFO to make enough power to overcome the tension on the camchain.

I got it started tonight. I think the whole thing about fuel dripping out of the air filter had something to do with it barely running. She started up fine today when I tried. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to tune the carbs which is BADLY needed. She's running really rough. Anyhow, I can't wait til I get off work tomorrow. Then its straight to the garage and carb tuning time  :)

Maybe I'll even get to ride tomorrow, but I shouldn't get my hopes up

I searched for this one but didn't have any luck.

I need to synch my carbs and adjust the mixture. What order should I do these in? I was thinking that I would synch the carbs before and after I adjust the mixture screws. What have your experience(s) been?

OK, I have been working with the mixture and its running a bit better now.  I am concerned about an occasional noise though.

every once in a while, it sounds like the engine wants to stop (and almost does, and then keeps going. It makes a sound like the cam tensioner extending. Happens under 2k.

I think that I need to re-check my valve clearances becuase there is a little much valve noise, but I'm not sure that this is related.

Other than that, it is running pretty well. I still need to work on the mixture though. I ran out of time since my neighbors like me and I want to keep it that way.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
