front disc lose?

i have just  brought  a 1994 gs  is it normal  for the disc  to move side  to side about 4mm  + 1 mm forward  or backwards ?  is it possible to tighten  the  spacer washers that hold the disc on

OK 4 mm side to side is excessive and 1 mm front to rear also is high, but a little in either way is OK.

Did the '94s have the semi-floater or full-floater rotors?

Does the whole rotor move, or just the shiney part that the brake pads touch?

Either way it sounds like you have way too much play in the rotor.  If the whole thing moves, perhaps the rotor bolts to the wheel are loose, but most likely your rotor is warped or damaged in some way.

Or, one of the spacers is missing. The one that actually holds the axle in the right leg or the spacer between that and the hub of the rim.

Naw, if one of the spacers was missing he would definately know it. The wheel would track back and forth on the axle and probably bind up the brake the first time you tried to turn.

Yep, I agree about the spacer.

Does anybody know what effect  losing the retaining bolt (at right angles to the axle) might have?

nada.

My wife lost her's somewhere on a trip down to Florida one year (yes it was my fault).  The only reason she noticed was that she happened to look down at it after we got there and asked, "Isn't there supposed to be a bolt there?"
So I swapped over one of the ones from my SV (it had two)...  :oops:

I think its just a bit of insurance in case the axle nut comes off, or perhaps to prevent the axle from spinning?

I know our disks are semi-floaters, but I do remember there is a way to make them full-floating. I just don't remember how, but it involves removing something around the circular spacers between the carrier and the actual brake surface. If this is the result of that mod, I would rather keep mine the way it is.

They are conical washers... that are like springs that want to go back to the conical shape... but are kept flat by the disk and the pin, small dia at the pin and large dia on the disk, ... You knock them conical the other way... or some like that... Or use a chisel and pry them up off the disk... so they are not bearing down on the disk.
