Speedometer rewind?

I have a 2000 model GS500 that I acquired very wrecked. It showed about 3274 miles which was the correct mileage. Both gauges were trashed.  I have rebult the bike and I bought a set of used gauges but the odometer reads 11856 miles on the speedometer.  My question is, can the odometer be turned back to show the correct mileage and If so, how?

Letter of the law...probably not ok to do it....when you got to sell the bike later on put Not actual miles on  the title (you may want to do that when you personally register it if you'll be riding it..). Keep the old gauge and take a pic of them together maybe...(so they can see what miles the gauges were at when the bike had teh 3724 on it..)..

You'd probably break the thing (The mechanism) taking it apart (Srinath...?) anyway.

I had it apart before but didnt want to risk tearing up the mechanism to try and roll it back.  I dont know if running it back with a drill will work.  Will it tear the insides up running it backwards with a drill?

It probably wont run backwards to begin with and you'd burn up a drill or two in the process.......
The other option is a zero mile Speedo from the factory ( $$Ouch!) or ride with what you have and keep shopping for a closer mileage one to stick on there...( Say  hunt for a 5k one and when your miles get close swap them out..).....

I was the opposite. After I had my wreck, I suddenly had 0 miles.

Thats the price I pay for such neverending coolness.
