Alarm

So it's my birthday today, and for my birthday I bought my bike an alarm!!!

I got the "SecuriPage 200" from 3rd Watch Alarms. It's a two way paging system - when the bike is moved (or stolen) the pager goes off at the same time as the alarm. The keychain pager is about the size of a lighter and really cute. It has all the usual alarm features including an ignition kill switch if someone tries to hotwire the bike.

I got it because I park my bike on the street and I'm paranoid about it being stolen because I had another bike stolen from the same spot a year ago.

Does anyone else have an alarm on their bike? If so, which ones? And how do you like them??

I was thinking about getting an alarm but then I heard that they only go off if the bike is pretty much lifted upright from the kickstand.  I just wanted it to deter vandalism and people (like kids especially) from "playing" with it.  You'll have to let me know how sensitive it is.  

Btw, how do people steal a bike without completely lifting it into a truck or something because of the steering lock?

This one will go "BLIP BLIP BLIP" if someone walks too close to it. If someone sits on it, or shakes it, it will sound the full alarm 5 times (and page me). If someone keeps touching it, or tries to mess with the ignition it goes off 15 times (and pages me) also killing the ignition.

Seems pretty good! We'll see how it works out =)

i'm definatly not worried about this bike getting stolen too much, but when i move on up into the world of fully-faired bikes in the not too distant future, this info is very good to know.

i bought a mossberg and walk around with it outside at random times in the middle of the night.  works pretty well, I still have a bike.

Lifting seems to be pretty common.  Lots of the theft stories I have read involve backing a van up to the the bike and tossing it in.  I even read one story from a guy who's R6 was nearly stolen form his garage.  The theives had already jacked up and moved both cars in his driveway and were in the process of cutting the bike's chain when he chased them off!!!  Some theives are REALLY persistent.  On the plus side.. the GS generally isn't sought after by the pros.. not enough $$$ to be made for the trouble.  

I once had an audiovox MA200 alarm on my R6.  It has adjustable sensitvity.  I set it to the 2nd most sensitive and it would go off if I forgot it was armed and just plopped my helmet on the seat or grabbed the bars and swung my leg over.  The only catch is that if its too sensitive it'll go off at all kinds of silly things like car doors slamming.

Just a thought: leaving your tank in its current state shold be a pretty strong deterrent as well.


Kidding, though such things really help. When I used a bicycle to get to the train station I always made sure I had a mongrel for that purpose.

I used to have an alarm on my bike, work good the only problem is  it has a tendency to drain the battery if I don't ride the bike much. No more alarm now.
