Throttle grip question

Hi!

As you can see on the picture below, my throttle grip has two holes where the cable end may be inserted. The right one on the picture moves the cable on a larger diameter...



Is it possible to use this for different throttle ratio (so that less movement is required for WOT)?

That kinda looks like a grip for a "push-pull" throttle set-up. I've never had my throttle assembly apart so I don't know what the stock one looks like. But I do know the GS uses a single cable. I don't believe you're going to see a different ratio unless the radius for the cable groove is different. Love the Baby G and the forum.

This is one of those things that I thought _I_ knew, too.  :dunno:

You're 3/4 right, C.  The '89-'00 models have a single throttle cable, but the '01+ models have a dual cable setup.

Ah sooo...that's probably why he's got two holes eh? I should have said..."the '89 GS500 has a single throttle cable, don't know about the later years." I miss the old HD's with the "suicide" throttle. Love the little scooter and the forum.

Don't you mean suicide shifter?

Either hole will work, and they will both work at the same ratio as the diameter of the throttle dictates ratio. You would want an increasingly larger diameter throttle, more like a cam lobe, to obtain the 1/4 pull throttle.

No I don't mean suicide shifter...never could get the nack of a hand-shift bike. I mean a suicide throttle...they don't have a spring return. The throttle stays in whatever position you put it in. To back off you have to deliberately roll off just the opposite of rolling on. I love 'em, great for highway cruising or warming the bike up...the old HD's had them. But I never did quite get the nack of a foot-clutch and a hand-shift...especially some of the Indians that had left-hand throttle with a right-hand shifter. But I do love the baby G and the forum.

Actually, my GS is a 2000 (model year 1999) and it has a single throttle cable... I didn't know there is a dual push-pull setup - I thoguht that bikes with two cables (like my brothers FZS600 Fazer) use one cable for 2 carbs and the other cable for the other 2 carbs... :oops:

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up....

I just hoped this was an easy way to get different throttle ratio (my hand is not flexible enough to go from idle to WOT in one movement)... :(

One thing that I like about push-pull throttles is that if the pull cable breaks you can get home by switching the cables. The 'push' cable really doesn't do anything for me.
