Hello List,
Some time ago the regulator/rectifier on my 92 gs went bad (was frying my battery), which i read is a very common problem and it was recommended to replace with an aftermarket unit. I, of course, didn't do that--i took one off a 86 gs and that has been working for several months. But my alternator suddenly died, i can't even push start the bike now (that's how i got it almost home last night). So i will end up replacing a few things. I wanted to search for the topic here but i don't see an index that specific. If anyone can steer me to some past discussions or share insights about the possible relationship between these two issues, i'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
K

My lights kept dimming irregularly not long after I bought my used 2000 GS. I replaced the stator and regulator/rectifier. That solved the problem. I bought new parts, and did the job myself. It wasn't cheap, but it was easy, and it works well. Good luck.

Common problem... what...  OK fine electrics can go at any time on shaZam! like this, but common... definetly not. Sudden alternator death... Mine did that, turned out I had let the wores come in contact with the chain... and shredded them...

Electrics have been fine on my bike, and I think I put mine under more load than most!

Only problem I've had so far was when the 10 year old indicator relay went.

Have a look at www.electrexworld.co.uk

a UK company I know, but they do make a new generator for the GS which gives out 30% more power.  I'll be upgrading as soon as funds allow!
