Rpms and shifting

I have searched the forums but I seem to find all different answers

What is the proper way to shift. how high should rpms be?
Since I have owned my GS. I very rarely shift into 6th unless I am going over 60mph.
Is it safe to run at higher rpms?
6 to 7 k in 5th.

Any advice or is it just based on different riders opinions or taste?

Let's see... When I'm feeling squidly, I run between 8k and 10k (only in first, second, and maybe third)... It's unwise to shift anywhere below 7k. I find it's best to go by feel than by the tach.

ok, if i'm going in first i'll go to about 6000 rpm.....2nd 6500, 3rd 4th 5th and 6th at about 7000 rpm

as i go faster i like to keep the rpm higher.....

so in the city (about 40 mph) i'll be at around 6000 in 3rd and on the freeway at about 8000 rpm


my speed/rpm is different than most because of the smaller front sprocket

I think this is covered in the owner manual, from memory it recomends 6th at 40 mph or thereabouts. depends a lot on your riding style.

To answer one question directly, yes it is absolutely safe to go high in the rpm range.  That's why the redline is way up at 11,000.  Feel free to go up there every now and then. The bike will be going about 60 mph or so at the redline in second gear.  

I've found the engine doesn't really respond nicely below 3,000.  Above that it works good (if slowly until you're closer to 7k) so that's my only real guideline.  I'll shift at 5k, or 7k, or 11k if I'm zooming.  Just don't lug it.  If you're just cruising, get to the highest gear you can for mileage.

I have noticed when riding the higher the rpms the better the response is from the little GS. Especially on back roads
