Crash #2

Well, around 2100 miles on the clock, and I had my first low side, which I have to say was much less awesome than the highside I was so fortunate to experience as my first crash.  It's rained here in Vegas 3 or 4 days in the past week, but I decided that, since the skies were clear today, I would go out and ride once it cooled down in the evening.  Driving by a local car lot, I entered into a left hand roundabout u-turn thing.  I guess the road was still greasy from the rain during the past days, because circling the curve between 10 and 15 miles an hour, she just came right out from under me.  I think I did the best thing and just let it go, had I tried to fight it I may have made it much worse..  It came to a rest about 10 feet away on it's left side, while I slid maybe three or four inches.  I was perfectly okay, the bike has got a few more scratches adding to her character.  As far as gear goes, I had on a Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket, my Icon Super Duty boots, my Icon Mainframe helmet, and my jeans.  Everything fared well, I managed to keep my head off the ground, the jacket has no visible signs at all of the slide, the jeans just had road dirt all over them, and the boots were a little scuffed but they probably saved my left ankle.  This happened at about 10:15 pm, and it's 1:10 am as I'm writing this, and by this point almost all the damage had been repaired as good as they're going to get unless I buy new fairings...just need some blue spray paint that I can blend to the fairing to cover up the scratches to some degree.  Now if the aftermarket could just hurry up with those frame sliders...Now I completely understand some of the dislike for faired bikes on the boards by some of the members.  Sorry about how long this is, just thought I should include all the details and specifics that I can think of, maybe it could be useful somehow to someone else down the road.  I'm not gonna lose sleep about it, because if I worry about it I'll get to the point where I'm afraid to ride, and I love it too much for that to happen.  The only thing that does worry me about it is that if I have too many more of these "mishaps" my dad is gonna take my keys...

Glad you are OK. 5 posts and two crashes, that'll give dad something to think about. Were you braking? accelerating? changing gear? any of these in the wrong circumstance could have caused the flip, otherwise you were simply very unlucky with the road surface. Rain after a long dry period can be very tricky but it sounds like your road was dry. Rain-washed dust and road-dirt wet or dry can have the "gravel" effect.
Take care be Lucky.

Nope, I was looking through the turn, already done whatever braking I needed, hadn't even started to roll back onto the throttle yet, and then it was out from under me and I had begun to try and devise a way to keep the damage hidden and unknown to my parents, but figured it wouldn't work when I came home with black marks all over myself...

Cal Price

Good decision about the parents, had you covered it up and they subsequently found out it would have looked a lot worse from their perspective. I know, I'm a grandpa!

Stang - I'm also in Vegas, we should get together for a ride! Where were you when you lowsided? Sounds like by the automall in Henderson?

I had a situation similar to this - however when I felt the back-end slide I automatically counter-steered to counteract it  and managed to not lowside (can't take much credit, it was just reaction rather than concious though) but it was all over in a second, and I was rather dainty on left turns for a bit after that, remembering that some oil (or diesel, I never did find out which) could have still been left on the tyre...
