Hi All,

I just finished repainting my tank on my 1993 GS500, and now the Bike stalls like crazy and when its at idle, 1000-1300 rpm's and I twist the trottle quickly nothing happens and it coughs just a little when i let the throttle go. Here is what I think the problem is. When I pulled the tank off, there is a screw on the underside of the tank that I turned to shut off the gas leaving the tank. However it was a pain in the butt to turn since the screw seems to be in backwards, and my frien'd GS500 has the scre in the opposite way. Anyhow, Does anyone know about this screw and how it works or what kind of valve it controls? This is where I think the problem is, but I'm not 100% sure and turning the scre 1/4 turn putting the tank back on and starting the bike doesn't seem to be the most direct solution right now. Has anyone dealt with this part before when pulling off your tank?

I really appreciate the help you guys have given me too.

Thanks,
Matt

if i recall correctly, that screw only turns 180 degrees.  the moddile position is on.  90 degrees to the left, or 90 degrees to the right is off.  also, put your petcock on prime for a minute, to let the float bowls fill before you start it up again.

Ok, life is bike and the bike runs awesome! So here is the deal. When looking at the screw on the petcock there are 3 positions, the slot in the screw is horizonal, vertical or horizontal in orientation. On the tiny circular stainless washer around the screw, there are 3 words. FUEL is at 12 o'clock, OFF is at 9 o'clock and ON is at 6 o'clock. I turned the screw all the way counter clockwise assuming that would be "ON". Started up the bike. It consumed what fuel was left in the system, then bogged down and stalled. I turned the screw 90 degrees clockwise, started up the bike and the trottle was VERY responsive, and the bike seemed to be running awesome. I took it around the block and the bike kicks a$$ now. So I'm not sure about the little metal word on the petcock, but it seems like the middle position was the money spot.

For people doing forum searches, I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for your help jiggersplat!

I'm going out riding - later all!
