Adjusting rear suspension?

Is there some trick to turning the rear suspension adjustment ring?  I had the GS500F on its centerstand and was using the tool supplied with the tool kit, but I couldn't seem to turn the ring from either side.  What would be a reasonable setting for two-up riding with a combined weight of about 290 pounds?

I've read somewhere posted here that someone was able to turn it from under the front, but I use a drift punch and hammer from the side myself.

I use a 24" flatheat screwdriver I bent up in a vise. VERY EASY.

I just got mine adjusted, I had to remove the piece of the rear fender bolted (actually screwed) on the underside of the frame.  Once I did that, piece of cake.  That allowed me the room to use the tool supplied.

I read a ton of posts after having my own trouble with the spanner tool.  The trick here is not to use the spanner tool and instead use a crowbar.  DO NOT USE A PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWDRIVER.

I finally got mine to turn last night.  I just used a big-ass flathead screwdriver.  It wouldn't budge, but I finally got it to turn "down" toward 1.  Once it was moving, I was able to dial it up.  Moving to 6 and 7 were the hardest.  I bent the ring out a bit with the screwdriver, but it shouldn't hurt anything.
