There are actually auto paint supply stores. Auto Zone, etc. usually only have rattle cans, look for an industrial paint place.

I get paint from Wesco: http://www.wescoautopaint.com/about.cfm  They might ship.  They'll put it into aerosol cans for no extra charge.

Some people suggest body shops, but when I tried to get some paint from a local shop, they said there was some environmental mucky that prevents them from letting paint leave the premises in the hands of a customer and not on a car.

paint is paint.. any fscking paint store.. try home depot. If you got the paint codes (dupont) then you can have them mix a batch.

yeah, latex does not like gasoline, in this case Home Depot is not your friend.  Regular rattle cans don't work all that well either.  Try an auto paint supply store.  They are more likely to sell to you than a body shop.  Actual automotive paint will withstand well, and will be a correct match.

I painted my bike with auto paint from Sherwin Williams.
Dude, what does mine say?  Sweet!  What about mine?

My son got some through his buddy.  He was going to paint the car in the garage but it did not work out.  Had to get it painted at Maaco.  Most shops don't want to use anybodys paint but theirs.
I think most of those paints are controled for environmental reasons.  You just can't get them anywhere.  According to the Maaco guy it's illegal in most states for you to paint a car yourself with those paints.

I think you guys have NAPA in the US too.  Some of them should sell auto paint.  for this you will need an HVLP paint sprayer.  They said they could mix it in a rattle can for me too but you would have to use it within a few hours else it will go hard in the can.

Also, I am painting my 89 Katana gas tank with engine enamel (available at auto and hardware stores).  This takes longer to harden than auto paint but should be resistant to gasoline once cured.

Stay away from laquers as they will never harden and will always come off with gas.

Instead of painting it yourself.  Try going to Maaco and ask the guy to call you next time he is painting a car with a color that you like.  How much can he charge you if he is doing the car anyway.
