I have some 'unscheduled, gravity induced maintenance' to do

Well I guess I didn't knock on wood hard enough(in Deuce Big's post), or didn't knock on wood for the correct reason.  I was at a large school sponsered event at a state park, leaving for a ride when I got hit by a boneheaded freshman. :(  :x   Absolutely no damage to me, very very slight scuffs to my JR jacket.

I was following him towards the last of the cars parked off the road, then he starts pulling off, I assumed(mistake) to park.  He's more than half way off the road, and I begin to accelerate to go past him, then I see his front wheels start to turn, absolutly no looking or no signal by him.  shaZam!.  I go for the brakes and before I know it I'm on the pavement.

I hit/he hit his driver's side door/front fender with my front fork.  Then I think I did a light highside as my bike was on it's left side and I was above it.  It happened extremely fast.  Bent clutch lever, bent left foot peg I think it bent the holes where the peg assembly attaches to the frame.  Scuffs on the right fork and somehow the signal generater and case(right side) got all cracked up.   :dunno:  Bike wouldn't start I believe due to the signal generator.  The signal generator plate was bent in and the 10mm hex bolt in the middle broke off at its threads.  I doubt it was just flooded because I left it for a long while and it still wouldn't start.

This is where he hit me:

Here's two pics of my busted case and assumed busted signal generator:

This is my bent up left footpeg, etc.

I filed a police report immediately and it was definately his fault for failure to yeild right-of-way while making a U-turn.  But apparently Michigan, where I'm at school, is a "no fault accident" state which means my insurance has to cover my damage.  That would leave me in sorry shape with a $500 deductable.  I guess that means I won't get paid as much to work on fixing my bike.  We'll see what happens...

Any comments, parts, or booze will be accepted now

bend the left foot peg back as much as you can before removing bolts
use a pipe wrench or large cresent wrench and a long pipe

Are you friendly with your local dealership? You may get them to pad the bill a little to cover some of the deductible....

Are you sure you are ok? Often you dont feel some injuries til later (kneck..back.....etc..)?

I appreciate the support everyone.  Werase, thanks for the advice on the footpeg.  That was one of the things I was more worried about.  Live and learn, maybe next time I'll have crash bars, or maybe I just won't crash again ;) .  Still no aches and pains, but we'll see what tomorrow brings.

500 bux deductible..ouch. Overall the damage is not too bad. Glad you are ok.  :(
It is not good enough to say that we are trying our best. We must succeed in doing what is necessary.

kyzee

oh yeah, i would have to induce some 'unscheduled, gravity induced maintenance' for his side mirror too if i were you..... j/k

My peg holes bent EXACTLY like yours. errr...but I aleady removed the bolts once :x   Been riding it as is for a bit.  Let me know how the bending trick works out for ya....

Roadstergal

Arrrgh!   :x

If the guy had a shred of decency, he'd take your deductible.  Bastiges!

Can you do the work yourself, and use the labor money to cover the deductible?

Update:  The next day I felt fine, except for soar arms and legs from lifting the bike into a truck.

Replacing everything with new parts will set me back $4-500.  Of course I'm not going to do that.  I think I'm going to skip the insurance company to keep my rates from going up.

Hajinomoto1, I grabbed the peg with a big channel-lock wrench and pulled it pretty well straight, almost rideable, but the peg itself is bent and the pin through the peg is broken.

Things I need to get the bike running:
-Signal generator assembly (#3)
-Signal rotor (#4)
-The key/pin between the signal rotor and crankshaft
-all the other stuff in this picture would be nice to get too

Next things I need:
-right side crankcase cover and gasket
-signal generator cover

And finally, I need a clutch lever and left footpeg assembly.  Clutch lever I will buy at the dealer and I call dibs on this footpeg

Please don't respond here if you have any parts for sale.  I will make a post in the FS forum.

How much is the Suzi part?  It looks like it's just a metal disk; you may be able to have one machined locally (just have them drill the big hole; you can add the other holes).

Quote-Signal rotor (#4)

Maybe someone who bought a V&H signal rotor would have their old stock one laying around?

...or just a CD, some fiberclass cloth, and JBWeld thinned with acetone :) .
Remember, you're in da UP now, eh?  Why use real motorcycle parts, when you could spend that money on some good snow boots and beer?

Good call on the bracket.  And in Mount Pleasant, too, only a 6-hour drive!

The diagram just points to the disk, but that part includes the contacts and  the long set of wires that snake up to under the seat ($107 at Ronayers).  I don't really need all the wire, just something to solder to.  Actually, I will have to give the contacts a closer look, they may be ok, but the disk is definately all messed up.  If the contacts are good, then yeah, I could probably get away with just a new used disk from someone w/ the V&H advancer.  I'll look at it tonight.

I thought about Yooperfying the bike  , but overall it is in really good shape and it's not to hard to bring it back to perfect running shape, as long as I can find the parts.  But if I get the signal generator in order, I may just have to use some duct tape until I get new crankcase and signal generator covers.  Ya know, the duct tape matches the engine paint well, eh!

Okay, I checked out the contacts on the disk and they are useless.  One is scraped up and both of the magnets inside are busted.  I need that whole assembly: disk, contacts and wires

Well, I've completed my unscheduled gravity induced maintenance and the bike is 98% back to normal.  I've actually been riding for a week now, with a broken crankcase cover.  I just used my old pal, duct tape, to seal things up and keep dirt out

I painted my new used crankcase cover this week with Plasti-kote light smoke metallic (1534) and put it on today with a new gasket.  The paint doesnt quite match with the engine, it needs a hint of yellow or gold or something to match better.  But I don't think you would notice unless you are looking for it.  Part of the reason i say the bike is 98% is that the generator cover i got used is in less than perfect shape and the foil decal is really scratched up.  I'm going to keep my eye out for one of those, or maybe just go with one of those fancy machined ones that someone is selling here.

The other small problem i have is that when i replaced my clutch lever, i didn't take the clutch switch out and broke the switch in the process.  Is this a common thing or am I just stupid?  For now, I just pulled the switch and taped it open so I can start the bike.  I thought about just getting rid of the switch altogether, or making a hidden security switch out of it, but I still think it would be best to replace the switch.  Any inexpensive ideas or does anyone have one of these switches lying around in good shape?

Hmmm.  $8.79 from Ron Ayers.  (Item #5 on THIS PAGE.)

Yeah, that's a little pricey.  Especially with shipping added.
