What am I supposed to be measuring?  I know I bend the little metal tab up or down, but what should I be looking for?

Should I bend it down and then reattach it and if it isn't enough then bend it the other way, then notice I was bending it the wrong way and bend it the other way?  Tedious.

GRU

you're supposed to bend it so the little metal tap just starts pushind down on the little "pencil looking thing" and at that point the top of the float is 14.6mm high from the carb...

so a correct float hight would be....tilt the carbs so the little metal tap starts pushing on the "pencil thing", then stop tilting the carbs...measure from the float bowl gasket to the top of the float and if it reads 14-15 mm it is good

Dom

Did you remember having to bend yours way far down?

GRU

sorry i can't explain better...i had a hard time learning how it works....maybe you'll understand better if you search the archive and maybe talk to kerry....he helped me understand how it works

EDIT: i didn't have to bend mine a lot....don't worry about how much you bend yours.....just have it set so the top of the float is about 15 mm above the float bowl gasket

Dom

Top of float is 15mm before it lifts the needle?

GRU

no no, it should be measure just when the tab starts to compress the needle....so start tilting the carbs the other way so the tab pushes down on the needle...then measure just when it starts to compress the needle...if it's not about 14 or 15 mm bend the tab and measure again

Dom

OK did that.  I think you are talking about the little button in the middle of the needle...well, whatever the case, my float levels are way higher...very near the gasket.  Awesome.

GRU

yeah, that little button in the middle compresses a little....just measure when it begins to compress

Dom

Criminy!  I get her started, float bowl heights look great...Let her warm up, adjsut idle, then give some throttle and it dies.  Now it wont start again.

Dom

7 hours of this, I give up.

The Buddha

OK U tube and outside is different from float height being 14.6 ... set U tube to float gasket level... the 14.6 is exactly that ... I think ...I can never get it right with that method ...
Cool.

It seemed to work on the first try, went exactly up to the gasket, and I had to bend the metal tab down alot..  Then I got it running and it konked out when I tried to give it throttle.  Then I gave up for the night.

For future reference, here's the relevant page from the Haynes manual.

Most of what you actually do is in Step 7.  The measurement in diagram 9.7 should be 14.6mm +/- 1.0mm.
