Clutch problem?

Since I have owned the bike I have had a nasty problem with the clutch. I am wondering if anyone has any advice for me.

The problem is it seams to hold really well with no slipping. It has a very small range where it will slip and when it actually is slipping it is very rough and sort of jerky, allmost a grinding feeling thoughout the bike. Last winter I took off the cover and disassembled the clutch somewhat. I discovered that the prevoius owner had installed different (wrong)springs. I replaced those with stock ones to no avail. I also measured the thickness of the plates and they were all in spec.

I have a new set of fibers. Should I try installing those with the old steels? Should I only install new fiber plates with new steel plates?
Could it be the basket? (hope not)

I am pretty well stuck and am in need of some guidance. HELP!!!!

If the steel plates are within spec, just give them a light emory buffing to knock off any glaze and they'll be good to go.  

Don't forget the adjustment for free-play in the pushrod actuator accessed underneath the removable plate [2 screws] on the sprocket cover.  It's covered in  periodical maintenance.
