I'm giving her a final overhaul before I put her up for sale. I really don't feel like taking the carbs apart to clean them out first. A friend of mine from SAE who built his cars with bike motors told me I could just pop the filters off and spray the carb cleaner right in while it was running- he said it would rev a bunch, but shouldn't cause any damage. He says he did that a lot with the old f3 motor and it never had any negative sideffects.
Anyone know if this is potentially damaging?  :dunno:

I couldn't say about damage, but I don't see how this method would clean out the "bottom end" of the carbs.  (Jets, valve seats, etc.)

The carb cleaner & air combo would be mixing with fuel as it exited the jets ... yes?

Yamaha carb cleaner... Lazy man's cleaner... and do not ever mix in it a GS's tank... 2 ways to do it... I have hooked up a supplementary tank... radiator overflow tanks, or syringe from the bottom of the bowl... but do no ever mix in a gs tank...
Cool.

I seee what you're saying with the spray method Kerry, that sounds about right.
I can probably do that Yamaha cleaner- I just don't want to put too much effort and $$ into it just to get it in top shape for selling it.

Wow, I'm gonna miss this....
you guys don't happen to have any Triumph Speed Four forum counterparts, do you?

I lowsided my bike once into a dusty ditch and got alot of gravel, sand, and dust in the airboxes and consequently some in the carbs. It wouldn't run smooth at all even after I cleaned the airboxes and filters. I got some "Seafoam" gas additive and ran a tankful of gas/Seafoam and it never ran better. This stuff is good for alot of different things, and I never heard anything bad about it.

carb cleaner and fuel additives are not going to clean out the fuel bowls..... :(  Ya they may help if the jets are some what gumed up. The only thing to worry about w/ the carb cleaner is that it may eat away at some of the rubber seals and may discolor the air box plastic....DON"T however spray the air filter ;)
