Is there a certain height the GS should sit?

I have installed a new bandit 600 wheel and a Gixxer rear shock in the rear with new tires front and rear and now the bike sits a little high. My centerstand does not even lift the rear wheel off the ground and my sidestand leans the bike alot the side.

Now I could adjust the rear height via shock. I'm just wondering what the ideal rear and front height should be and how should I measure this.

Yes. I got it from a fellow here.

But back to the question what is the ideal height clearance for front and rear? Can Imeasure this from the axles dow to the ground?

The only height ref I can find says seat height 790mm

I worry that if the front is is much higher or vice versan from stock height, the bike my handle different and be dangerous, so I was wondering what height for front and rear are acceptable for the GS frame.

I've just had a look in the comparison "Bible" What-Bike as it used to give ground clearance but does not do so now. However on the seat height the GS500f/e, Bandit GSF600(s), GSX600F are all listed as 790mm the only difference visible is the rear brake position. The wheels APPEAR to be the same. The GSX-R600 is 825mm and wheel is different.

Just found it on the U.K. importer's site, ground clearance GS500e is 150mm.

So that the clearance distance from the lowest part of the frame, i take somewhere under the engine area, to the ground?

congrat, you just jacked the rear 1.5-2 inches
the center stand just barely holds the bike up????
use a 2x6 piece of scrap wood to lift the rear up

bike will handle better. it will turn it a little better and you have more ground clearance

Yup, the centerstand doesn't even lift the rear wheel off the ground. I'm using one piece of 2x4 to lift the rear off the ground for adjustment and two pieces of 2x4 and a jack to put on the front wheel.

One of the problems I have encounter now with the 600 wheel is that when the centerstand is up it rubs a little on the chain. I have to figure out how to solve this problem besides removing the centerstand.

Also the kick stand leans the bike so much I'm afraid it might tip over.

you know under the muffler....
there is a rubber bung for the center stand to rest against....

add a spacer  to .... lower the centerstand
it will clear the chain then

I just notice that. Thanks for the advice, I will try that.

Any hints on how to raise the sidestand so that the bike does not lean so far over?

weaselnoze

dont u mean lower the sidestand? i would like to raise mine or something cause my bike sits so straight up  that even if there is a lil slope in the ground where i park it, the kickstand has to be on the low side or the bike will fall over..

Oops I meant lower it. I was thinking of drilling a hole on the part of the kckstand that touches the ground and attach a piece of hard rubber about 1.5 inches thich to it with a flush bolt.

There isn't a single correct height for the rear of the bike so much as a set of tradeoffs regarding turn in, seat height, stability, etc.  I have a higher series rear tire (130) and a Katana shock, which raise my rear end by about an inch, but I quite like it that way.  It makes the steering quicker and more responsive and gives me a bit more legroom (I have long legs).

I don't have problems with the center or sidestand, but I do notice that the rear wheel isn't quite as high off the ground anymore when on the centerstand.  You can modify the stands to make them fit correctly given the proper handling characteristics on the move.

Yes. Check the gsxr shock install on my webpage. I lengthened the sidestand in a really simple way to bring it back up to a regular angle when sitting on the sidestand. I tried the centerstand spacer but I hit the c/s once while banked over in a turn (hit a dip) and that freaked me out. So I took it off. I kept it and reinstalled it for oil changes and such.

Just read the article Pablo. Excellent method.  Will give it a try this week.
