dgyver mentioned this in another thread:

QuoteJust watch out for the cops and pay attention to signals from other bikers. If you see a rider tapping the top of his helmet, that means there is a cop ahead.

Useful knowledge -- is this a universal signal?  If not, what gets used in your region?  Are there any other gestures you folks use to communicate with other riders?  (Other than that one.  ;) )

I was pulled over for the first time on my GS and didn't enjoy it enough to want to do it again any time soon.  :)

That is indeed the accepted sign here, also things with lights but our law is different we don't have to have lights on at all times although many, including me, do so.

In Cricket the testicular guard, or Box, was introduced in 1874. The helmet was introduced in 1974. Is there a message??

Agreed, also the signal that looks like you're patting a dog means slow down (Cops, rocks, road kill, anything you'd want someone to warn you about).
If you see a Harley passenger patting the driver vigorously on his lap........you'll have to figure out what  kind of signal that is by yourself
We don't really know what we're doing and even when we do, it doesn't seem to help. Bono

Yes, that's a standard sign for cops, as is holding your index finger up and twirling it in a circle (like rotating lights).  If you google around you'll find some other standards signals, but the other two I tend to use regularly are foot off the peg kicking slightly to indicate debris or road hazards and hand out palm patting down to indicate to slow down.
