Diameter of front axle?

I would like to know the diameter of the front axle.  I want to pass a length of threaded rod through the front wheels bearings.  I am getting ready to change my front tire and I want to build a tire changing rig like the one in this link. http://www.clarity.net/~adam/tire-changing-doc.html

I am lazy and do not want to remove the cotter pin and nut until I am ready to change the tire.  There is not enough axle bolt showing to get a good measurement.  Thanks.

Darn - I wish Manjul (The_good_guy) and I had known on Saturday.  We had his front axle off, and we could have measured it with some dial calipers that we used for his valve adjustment.  Oh well.

I would be glad to pull my cotter pin and nut and measure for you, but I'll bet that if you had some extra cotter pins you wouldn't hesitate.  Here are the ones I have bought at local home centers in the past:

Notice how they are ALL about 1/2" longer than they say they are?  :dunno:  I prefer the ones on the far left.  They look too thick to fit through the axle nut slots and the holes drilled through the axle, but they work fine on both front and rear axles.

I'm pretty sure that both axles have the same diameter, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.  Anyway, here is what one of these cotter pins looks like at the rear axle:

I usually don't care to bend the pin around the end of the axle like that.  In fact, sometimes I cut off both ends of the pin so I can just spread them a bit without having them poke out and threaten someone's leg.

Next time I'll buy 1/8" x 1" pins.

Anyway, I'll get that measurement if you like.  I'll probably forget or won't have enough time in the morning, but tomorrow after work would be a cinch.

dgyver

The front wheel bearing is 15x42x13mm. IDxODxThickness
The 15mm is the inside diameter, hence the diameter of the axle.
Common sense in not very common.

Thanks so much "dgyver".  Also, thanks for the offer to check Kerry.  I certainly did not want anyone to go out of their way to check for me.  I was just wondering if any one knew or already had the axle out so they could measure it quickly.  Thanks again guys.

I tossed cotter pins a long time ago... I use hitch pins... re useable and easier to pull, especially road side...
Cool.

Yes... and please tell me you found that pic of a hitch pin on the net... and not click it in a hardware store...
Cool.

scratch

I still use cotter pins. I have a hitch pin for the rear, but I haven't switched to it, because I haven't had to do a chain adjustment in 3,000 miles. I'll still use a cotter pin on the front.
