1) what is the overall height of a gs500?  Being that this is my first street bike (I've been on dirt forever); I'm not very comfortable on driving the whole way home (4 hours)
2) anyone know what is needed to be done to get my motorcycles learner permit in georgia?
3) Is progressive a good company to insure the bike through?  I'm 19 with a speeding ticket or two about 2 years ago..

Also... there is a front lower lip fairing I've seen on a couple bikes... I *think* it's called the targa lip... anyone know a source for that?

1.) hate to say this, but the search button is your friend on this forum. also, check the hompage for bike spec's at http://www.gstwins.com . this is also my first street bike, and i'm comfortable with it! spent the last couple of decades on cr's

2.) check with your local license / department of motor vehicle office. usually, the permit is just a quick 15 minute paper test.

3.) check around for insurance rates. depending on your location and population will cause every company to vary in rates. i found 1 place that would insure my bike without another car with them, and it was progressive. $75 for a year, but keep in mind, i'm 25 and have a clean driving record.

decal kit looks decent, and the tank protector is a good thing to have.

one thing you will find is the bent of the stock bars is a little akward... just swap them out for a set of CR high renthal or other brand and everything is comfortable!

hope it helps!

as far as your insurance goes. i am 20, have one very recent speeding ticket on my record and my insurance (through progressive) is $244.00 per year. my bike is a 95 model also, so yours will probably be very close
Don't tell scotty, cuz scotty doesn't know

Hmm. Just wondering how other peoples' insurance rates are lower. i'm 20, no tickets, looking at a '90 model with $300 insurance per year(progressive). i'm about two hours south of you. Perhaps deductibles are different?

As far as the permit and all, go to the local DMV(or wherever you have to go for your licensing test) and ask for the motorcycling handbook. The permit is a no-night, 6 month deal for a written test. i don't know if you have to do that route or not. You may be able to go ahead and get a full license(haven't been out to my local GSP office to find out).

If you need any more info, pm me or bump this thread and i'll respond with what i can.

i dunno. i am paying 244 per year for only liability. that could be a reason

Well, I've got a '94, and I'm about to turn 21. I pay $147/yr, liability only through Progressive... That's with an at fault accident on my record, I wonder why you guys are having to pay so much...

The state you live in is the controlling factor... CA is 1/2 the price of NC, and additional bikes nudge up the cost 10%, like 80 for first bike, additional 8 for second and 6 for bike 3, and 5 for every one after that.
NC is linear, and double CA... and Oh BTW multi vehicle discounts apply to cars only... Bikes first bike ~ 160, #2 is another 160 and so on ...

I also add that your county/city of residence has a HUGE factor. If there are a lot of thefts, underinsured, UNinsured, or just accident-prone drivers in your area, be sure that your premium will reflect that.

I lived in the middle of nowhere NY and paid $52/yr for liability on a '98 GS. Now I moved to NE Phila and expect to pay around $300, if not more, for the same coverage.

While this is pretty much accurate... that's not what I meant when I said state you live in...
I am certain Northern CA (where I lived) is worse for the demographic in terms of bad drivers, and for sure Atlanta is, and while charlotte has the SC influence (we constantly criticize them for being Hill billies who have not a clue - though I think that is un fair... both NC and SC are hill billies and worse we dont even have a hill) insuranec in CA and GA are cheaper and not as F@#ked up as NC. BTW car insurance in NC is great Cheaper than CA and I am thinking possibly cheaper than GA. Only conclusion - NC wants to screw bikers ... and CA and GA has recognized the value of bikes to societies problems, while NC looks at bikes as the problem
