I was wondering what indentirfing features the California model had, I suspect that I might have a California model and was wondering if there was some ways to know if it for sure.

What's the model year?

EDIT: Someone posted a set of pictures showing the CA charcoal canister and hookups a while back, but I can't find it (yet).  That's the best clue, but I'm not sure if the arranegment changed after 2001....

on the 2001 model the canister is a black box roughly rectangular that sits above the shock area, just in front of it, behind the airbox.

my 89 cali model has that canister

coll0412

Yeah my is a 99, I was wondering if there is a performance difference, or can I still do the regular mods.

You can still do the regular mods.  I'm not sure about a performance difference, but you can just pull the evaporative canister off the bike if you want.

When you pull it off, make sure you plug the holes where the hoses went, or you might run into problems with weird air flow, or so I have heard...

Is it easy to adapt a non-Cali model to Cali-model to meet emission? I have a non-Cali model and I am moving to San Francisco.

pantablo

what year and what mileage is your bike, Dima26?

CA DMV regulations say that you cant bring in a NEW bike, meaning it has to be 5 years old or have 7500 miles on it. If it meets one of these two criteria you'll be fine.

check their website. www.dmv.ca.gov

from the website:
California residents are prohibited from importing, purchasing, or leasing a new vehicle from another state, unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California and the Environmental Protection Agency label certifies the vehicle has California smog equipment. California considers a new vehicle to be any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time it is purchased or aquired.

I dont know where I got the 5 yr thing but remember reading it somewhere in their website (FAQ area maybe?).

new to california?

Thanks Pantablo

I think I am allowed to import my bike to California because it was purchased and registered before I moved to California (I read that somewhere on DMV web site) however I was asking to see if I have troubles selling it to a dealer or somebody. I guess, I will need to find somebody out-of-state to do that.

My bike is 2004 with 750 miles :)

The carbs on the CA model have some additional plumbing, which is somehow related to emissions.  My bike was a CA model.  I have since replaced the carbs, (maybe not the smartest idea I ever had).  When I removed the emissions ballast, I took off the seat, plastic, and unbolted the gas tank.  I then started the bike and proceeded to start pulling hoses.  When the bike would stall, I knew that was something that either needed to be attached or plugged, depending on where the hose went.  Good luck.

This '89 to '00 diagram (from the Haynes manual) doesn't show the exact positioning of the extra "plumbing" in the frame, but you should be able to follow the hoses.  Items 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all CA-specific.  Does this help?

I also understand that the ignition advancer in the CA models is off by 7? (or 12?) degrees from everybody else's.

I am going to have to take a look when I get some free time and see if I can locate this canistor. And I hope I dont ever find it :P

You should be able to just squat down and examine the carbs.  If you see a hose connecting the two carb bodies ... you've got a CA-fitted machine.
