I was really surprised to see that it went for that much.

I would have bid about $75 max..., as you can see I cut out at $15...is this another one of those instances where people paid way too much for something?  Like two people who were determined to win the auction at all costs placed high dollar bids even though they only expected it to go to $100 and both got worked... :lol:

Kind of reminds me of that guy last week who paid $130 for the Buell dual headlight kit that he could have bought brand new from the HD dealer for $60...doh!

On a side note, I found one at a salvage yard that had a little rust color on the piston right where it meets the seal, it was $20.  Is this normal, is it worth it, is it trash, or if I do buy it is there any way to clean it up.  It didn't seem like it was leaking at all.  It was less rusty than some of the examples in Pantablo's guide.  Also it was the kind with the two threaded adjusters on it.

Rust on the piston is bad!  It makes the piston rough, so it will chew out the seal in no time.  I don't know if the piston can be replaced as a single item.  You could try having it machined and the hard chroming redone, but it's likely to cost you as much as a new shock.  At least you guys have the option.  I could not get a used shock here in AUS for any price.  Had to go new, and a really good aftermarket one (I got a Hagon) cost only slightly more than a new GS500 shock, and a helluva lot less than a new GSX-R 750 one.  Go figure.

According to Pablo's site it should work, but haven't got it yet to verify.

According to Pablo's site it should work, but haven't got it yet to verify.

For a street bike wiht a 160 lb+ rider ... a kat shock is better... GSXR is too stiff and too tall and makes for some intersting issues with side stand and chain clearances. Now the one you bought Gavin... make sure the top clevise has a dial for rebound... pics on ebay that dont show these litte featurs have me suspicious ...what are they trying to hide... If the shock has a remote reservoir and it has been removed... the shock is worthless ... this one I dont think had a remote at all so its not a 98+ kat its a 98- kat.

It's just a Katana, though.  Not really sure how much it's worth.  There is a guy parting out a 2000 that want's $80 for his shock.  If it doesn't sell you might just toss him an offer.

Ooo, thanks for the heads-up.  This guy seems reasonable so if it is worthless I'm sure he'll stand good for it.  On the other hand, he is selling a bunch of parts as 98-03 stuff.  Hmm, I guess I'll just wait and see.  He did happen to take the picture at exactly the wrong angle.  :dunno:

The shock pics from pablo's site were clicked by me ~2 years ago... I sold a few dozen of the Kat shocks ... definite Kat 600 and 750 89-98 ones for 20 each. So 80 ... is sorta high.

Let me backup Sinrath. I got a Kraptana 600 shock off ebay for twenty.  It's a great upgrade with progressive springs.  Plus it's got rebound so you can play around with it until you like the ride.

How do you install the shock with that little canister on it?

And what does that little fella do?

The little canister is the fluid resevoir, and I have heard that it is impossible to mount shocks without a remote resevoir, just not enough room.

I've got Danny's 93/94 GSXR remote resevoir shock, you guys think that will work for me?  I'm 6'5.5", 185-190 lbs depending on season without gear on...Got progressive springs and 15wt up front...Whaddya think?  I ride pretty hard on the street, and I like pretty stiff suspension on everything I have, I hate that floating feeling...

You're good Tony. I have a '93 gixxer shock and weigh 200#. The bike handles great. As for Srinath's earlier comments, yes the bike sits a little higher in the rear and leans a bit more on the sidestand, but it's never once worried me about coming over. And it's easily repaired by having s machine shop weld an inch of steel into the sidestand if it bothers you that much. I've had no chain clearance issues.

Scooby, zip tie or hose clamp the canister to the subframe taking care to make sure the hose doesn't get bound up in the shock spring, chain, etc. Other than that, a little notch in the lower mount tab and you're good to go.

The chain is more prone to rubbing the top of the swingarm near where it goes into the engine case... But that 185-190 mark is right about where the GSXR shock starts to make sense ... at 220 lbs its quite good. I have a RF900 on mine I think and its near perfect.
