Fast Idle problem.

Hey guys. I had a question about some trouble i am having with my suzuki GS500.

I am a relatively new biker and i got my GS around a year ago. However, 6 months into it I had to stop riding for a few months because I went abroad to study. well basically my problem is:

Ever since i have come back to the bike, it starts fine, but whenever i give the engine a little gas, it will continue to rev up until around 5-6k rpm as if i am constantly giving it gas even if the clutch is down.

This won't happen as soon as i start the engine, it only happens when i rev it just a little past 2-3k rpm. The choke is off and seems to be working. However i notice that when i release the choke, the engine will rev up, but when i put the choke back down it doesn't seem to stop revving at the higher rpm that is constistent with a choke.

So basically i can still ride the bike, and when i am in gear with the clutch out the bike goes fine. However, as soon as i hit the cluch down to brake the bike will start revving up to 5-6k rpm uncontrollably.

Since i haven't ridden the bike in a while i was thinking maybe the carbs are gummed up?

Any help would be appreciated. I am currently deciding between taking it to a mechanic or maybe putting some engine cleaner in it and seeing how that goes.

I just took another look at it. Seems as if the choke isn't responding at all anymore. It just seems as if the choke is constantly open. I am not sure what i can do to fix that though. Thanks for any help.

What led you to make this assessment?  Are you actually checking the position of the plunger after pulling the choke lever towards you and again after pushing it back to the OFF position?

When I talk about "the plunger" I mean this item on the RIGHT side of the bike.

If you have a 2001 model (or later) the plunger is closer to the LEFT side of the bike.  (Photo was taken from rear of bike.)



If the plunger on your bike stays in the ON position when you push the lever forward, the fix is to lubricate the choke cable.  I can't remember whether the lower end needs to be freed up (which usually means removing the fuel tank so you can get at it).  But whichever end of the cable is easier to expose, it's definitely something you can do yourself.
