for torque right? would this cause the bike to be more prone to wheelies?

some people change to a 15tooth sproket and have like it alot.

One tooth down in the front is highly recommended arounf here.  I did it myself on my 2001 model.  It does not make the front wheel come off the ground...unless you rev it to about 8-9k and dump the clutch.  It does not 'significantly' reduce gas mileage or speeds.  In fact, top speed could be increased this way since the GS won't redline in 6th with stock gearing.

A sprocket will set you back about $15 and takes maybe 10 minutes to change.  Well worth it.   :thumb:

You could also install an ignition advancer and further the low end power increases.

Rejet it before you advance the timing... lean mix down low has a higher tendency to detonate ... especially if you have an extra lean bike, or have some little debris in your fuel passages, or if you're unlucky ... rejetting will take you out of that zone ...BTW help the low end a bit too... there is always the pipe and filter and rejet with Stage 3 ... in addition to  advancer and 15 tooth ...
Cool.

13...... :o

that's just too small........man my 15 is pissing my off because the gears are short.....a 13 tooth sprocket will strech your chain and your gears would be very short....i think the 1st gear would take you to no more than 25 mph

dgyver

//www.evilpumpkinracing.com has an excel gearing chart that helps to calculate your speed with different gearing selections. It is best to measure your rear tire diameter and not use theirs. I have printed out a chart for each of my gearing combinations to see what I need for each track.

I agree, I just sold my XL600R and I could out accelerate any damn thing on the road, until I got to about 40mph.  Great bike for the city, just don't plan on driving over 50mph at any reasonable rpms.

Likely to be much the same.  In the ballpark we play, 1 tooth up on the front is roughly equal to 3 teeth down on the rear, and vice versa.  So I guess 15/39 will make a bit more of a difference, but there won't be much in it.
I don't know how things are where you are, but here in Oz we can only get the stock 39T for the rear with any degree of ease, so changes are pretty much restricted to the front one.
I tried the 15T and didn't really like it. (Yes, I know that makes me a bit odd around here  :P ).  I'm currently running a 17T front.  Haven't really noticed slower off the line but is more comfortable on the highway.   Also better in the hills because when you drop a cog or two for the corners, there's less of a tendency to lock up but still pulls hard out of the corner.  I should add that I have a Uni foam filter, a less restrictive pipe and jetting changes to suit.
Judging by the revs in top gear, compared with the stock 16T, 15T raised them by about 400-500 while the 17T dropped them about the same amount.  The best advice is to suck it and see.  Front sprockets are cheap, easy to change, and if you stay within the 15-17T range you shouldn't need to get a new chain.  Good luck.  :thumb:
