What is Goat's Syndrome?

I hear people talking about it left and right but I've yet to actually hear a definition.  Do you get it from goats?  What about sheep?  Geez...I better see a doctor.

Serious question.

se7enty7

it's when for an unexplained reason the generator magnet shatters, normally taking out the stator with it.

Three main people have had it:

Goat
Srinath
se7enty7 (ME)

Goat and my bike both went down on the left side (mine was light..) and I think that's what caused ours..  the case cover getting bent/cracked/disturbed and the stator bumped the magnet... which resulted in catastrophe...

Srinath had a bad starter clutch.  It vibrated and banged around, which probably cause a generator magnet to dislodge.

se7enty7

also...

To fix it you need to remove the generator magnet.  Goat and srinath used a tool made out of a rear axle with a heavy weight on it.  You thread the axle onto the generator magnet and slide the weight back, literally pulling it off like a dent puller (It's REALLY on there TIGHT).  I used a sears gear puller and it popped right off.

With me, my case cover was bent.  So I bought a new magnet, a new stator, and put it on... and guess what? It happened AGAIN.    So.. I bought a used case cover, a used stator, and a used magnet, and now it works fine.  I've used probably 20qts of oil.. changing every 30 miles or so to make 100% sure ALL the little magnet bits are gone.  I had the best scenario.. both times only one or two magnets were chipped a bit.  Srinath's magnets were nearly totally destroyed.. I dunno about goat.

Goats Syndrome - GS - affects GS'es ...
In medical custom ... the first patient to get a disease becomes the name of the disease ... Lou Gherig's disease is a classic example, so is Parkinson's, Alzheimers and more....
Goat was the first so its goats syndrome ... his rotor was like 1 was broken into a million pieces, another was into 3-4 pieces and the other 4 were almost intact. Mine was 2 shattered, 2 broken in a few pieces, and 2 were intact. MIne was also so tight on the crank I drilled a hole in the rotor and used a S shaped steel rod to hook it to the foot peg to hold the crank in place just to unbolt it off the crank then came the slide hammer welded in to take it off the crank ... not easy ... my rotor didn't come loose ... it was just jarred into disintegrating ... It was tight as hell.
Cool.
Srinath.

to go into a little more detail on how I got mine off.

You can see how I partially unscrewed the center bolt, then attached the puller and cranked it down with a quarter underneath it.

In the second pic you can see a couple things.  First, the stator is damaged (see the edges) and 2nd, see the white epoxy on the bottom of the case?  It was cracked and repaired.

couple of places... the first stator I bought from parts depot for $120 or so.  The magnet was from a member here for $40 I think.

The case cover, magnet, and stator I got off ebay.  The stator wasn't in great condition.. I'll probably buy yet another from parts depot before all is said and done.

When taking the case cover off, go buy 4 LONG bolts.  Take out the four bolts  closest to the round part that sticks out of the case, and thread the LONG bolts in.  Then take out the other bolts.  When removing the case you use the long bolts as guides so that the magnet does not attach itself to the stator

Those are some nasty pics.  I cringed when I saw all those little chunks.

If you are worried about all the little chunks swimming around in your engine, I have seen people epoxy magnets inside their cases to capture all the little strays.  Another idea would be to epoxy a tiny magnet onto the end of your oil drain nut, that way you can easily swab it off every time you change your oil.

se7enty7

I added a magnet to my drain nut

It looks nasty but keep in mind that it's magnet bits, not steel....    rather than chewing up bearings/etc they just crumble.  Not too mention they seem like really 'soft' magnets (I continued breaking it apart...)

also... it looks *really* horrible because removing the generator magnet breaks them even more (from the stress of yanking them off....)

It's always refreshing to know that there is a disease named after you  Oh well, at least its not some disfigurement or horrible contagious disease.

Actually, I just used a rubber mallet. Sent the whole assembly flying. Right onto my gas tank. Yeah, thats where my first dent came from   I certainly learned something that day.

Blueknyt happened to have an extra rotor, stator and starter clutch, so I bought them from him.

This is what my rotor looked like when I took it out:

Which took the stator with it:

For what it is worth...Suzuki has changed the design of the magnets and fully encased them. Too bad there is not an upgraded version for the GS.

Common sense in not very common.

Blueknyt

tobad you could hold a GS rotor side by side with TL and see if theywill crossfit.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

Its you Vs the pavement.....who wins today?

I did check that. The TL stator is larger in diameter so the magnet rotor will be as well. Never know if there may be option from another model.
