When I am slowing down I can "hear" my engine around 5.5kish down 4kish ...  All my vehicles have had hydro valves that really didn't make noise or need adjusting.... am I just hearing valve noise?  This happens mainly after it's warmed up

Sure it isnt your tank rattling, my tank rattles everyonce and awhile right at those rpm's you mentioned.

mine does it to, everything smooth and quiet for six miles then it starts rattling on the overun, when i accelerate rattling stops. i think c.c.t. is sticking through lack of use, i,ve cleaned it a few times but it still does it so i,m  thinking of getting manual chain tensioner, but also going to try( winding spring up) read about this on this site trying to find out more about it first. :thumb:

I folded a thick paper towel a couple times and used it as a 'buffer' at the front lip of the tank... the noise went away...

I can't believe the resident gurus haven't responded. :o

The buzz @ 5,000rpm is a "normal" vibration area with the GS500. It does indeed come through the tank. By itself it does not indicate a problem.

Well, I'd assume any slighlty mechanically inclined guy can differentiate the resonance of the tank to actual mechanical noises form the motor. At least I hoe so...

has it happened to you?

I am more than *slightly* mechanical.. and the noise mine made did NOT sound like tank noise; it sounded like noise from the top end of an engine; possible a loose camchain smacking around.  The fact that it happens while decellerating, and stops when you accelerate, would confirm my assumption.

it,s not just the gs500 that suffers this problem, just about every bike on the planet (barring cam geared honda,s)has a problem with auto c.c.t,s. and from what i have read on bike forum,s in the U.K & the U.S.A. the a.p.e. manual c.c.t. seems to be the answer. on the gs it might be a pain to fit, but once it,s set you can forget it for 000,s of miles :)

If the noise is at 5,000rpm ONLY, give or take 500 rpm, and NOWHERE ELSE, wouldn't that tend to rule out "a loose camchain smacking around"?

Most if not all GS500s will buzz (through the tank) at this rpm, particularly decelerating. If yours is doing otherwise, then you most likely have a problem that needs attention.

OK tank noise happens at specific rpm's ... not just accelerating or deccelerating ... 5k is rather high for a CCT ... mine was closer to 2-3K. But when closing throttle is when it rattles ... Ape manual one is overkill and not needed, I would rewind it. BTW when you have the valve cover off, when cranking the motor over to check valves, look at the section of cam chain between the 2 cam sprokets... if any time you notice the chain sagging between the 2 ... that = CCT busted.
Cool.

hi srinath, you say a .p.e is over kill and to rewind c.c.t..by rewinding it,  do you mean turn the screw in the back of c.c.t. past were it has stopped automaticly to make the camchain tighter. if not, could you explain what you mean.  :dunno:

The Buddha

Actually not exactly ... take it off and wind that watch spring ... just a shade extra ... the thing usually is that the spring anchor to the wall comes loose ... atleast it mine it was...
