EAST coast-who has kerry's valve adjusting kit?

I've seen the video...well worth AT LEAST 5 bucks.  Oh yes, I'll need Kerry's tool kit after se7enty7 or whoever else is in line is done with it.  I'll be doing Daniely's and my own bike's adjustments/checks with it...and would throw in my shims if I in fact need to change them.

About the video, I went from being real close to just having a shop do it (I'm at ~8K miles without a check) to being very confident that I can do it and not mess anything up.  It is really that easy once you see it done.

se7enty7, are you getting Srinath's or Kerry's kit?  Who is getting Kerry's kit next?

davipu, I just sent you a PM with Mk1inCali's name and address.

If you get done with the kit before Monday and he doesn't get online or see these posts before then, we can save some time by sending it out anyway....

it is a little piece in the motor that provides the proper clearance between your valve and the camshaft.

so the plan as it sounds right now is that I am going to drop the kit off on wednesday morning on my way through.

Mk1inCali

I think my next two weekends are open, so I should be able to get Daniely's and my bikes taken care of, so probably 2 weeks and I'll be able to send out the kit again.  Bringing up the 5 dollar shim contribution/video deal...If either Daniely's or my bike need any shims, what shims should I have the LBS order as well?  I'm guessing 2.45-2.55 range, but Kerry, any ideas on that?

I don't have a good feel for the variation in ALL GS500s, but the few that I've worked on have needed anywhere from 2.40 to 2.65.  The ones on the thinner end of the range have always gone for tight exhaust valves, while the 2.55-2.65 have been for intake valves.

Again ... it will depend on the factory-installed thicknesses, the number of miles on the engine, etc.  If you can get quick turnaround on shim orders I would wait until you see what you need and what shows up in the kit.  Besides, if either of you have Srinath-style engines where the clearances actually get looser....

Alright, sounds good Kerry, I'm going to check with my LBS and see how fast they can get 'em to me.  Probably do Daniely's bike this weekend and get that all kosher...Seems like his is more out-of-whack while riding than mine is, plus he's got 11.7K on his, mine with 8.2K.  Might just be the weird altitude jetting that we haven't changed yet since he hasn't ridden it a whole lot as of late.  Anyway, I'll be sure to post what changes we make if any once we break the two bikes down, for future reference!

Anyone wanna bet they don't have a setup like mine?

I too had the honor of using Kerry's valve adjust kit. Problem was the valve clearance on both exhaust camshafts were too tight & both shims that were currently inside were 2.15 mm (the smallest Suzuki makes according to Kerry :?  :? ).

The only thing I know is to take it to the shop and let them figure it out. I know it will cost me and arm and a leg, but I figure there is got to be something other underlying reason why they are sooooo tight.

Yea there is an underlying reason ... the damn bike is lean as hell ... making the valves run hotter and that in turn makes them softer and that accelerates wear ... If you had the same quality material (Dripping and flowing torrent of sarcasm here) that kawasaki used in their intake valves on the EX and ZX and ZG (concours) and ZL (eliminator) motors of yore by now your valves will have turned into fresh ground pepper ... rejet if your valves get tighter, if you valves get looser ... change the oil more often and run higher quality oil in it and make sure its topped up... having said that ... a little bit of both has to happen ... cos these things all clobber each other many many times a second ... so do the best and it will not drastically change ... Mine get thicker ... albeit slowly ... I have moved up less than 2 sizes on average (yea yea I know about the mathematician that drowned in the deep end of the pool cos it was an average of 4 feet only) but couple of my valves have moved 1 size and the other 2 ... right intake is one of them ... and left exhaust have gone up 2 ... BTW the stoopid right intake has a scratch in the cam ... which I have been staring at for 40,000 miles and has not changed much at all ...  :thumb: ... My advice for long life on valves ... rejet and make it run the coolest possible, run the best oil you can get - and remember cheaper is not neccesarily bad, and pricier isn't neccesarily the best, keep it clean and topped up ... and avoid running too many low rpm's and excessive idling ... 4K minimum if you are moving, and no more than 3-4 mins of idling ...
Cool.

Cool cool. I guess you guys can PM me when the kit is ready :)

I think I'm going to start posting here a lot more.. you guys are just too cool and nice not to.

Anyone here from the bay area???

Mk1inCali

Haven't had the time lately to check in here every day like I have for the past few months, so forgive the time lapse, but yes, Eisenfaust, I'll PM you when I'm ready to send the kit to you.  Probably be 2 after two weekends, but might be faster than that if I can get one of the two bikes I'm going to do, done and checked out this weekend.  Eisen, if you don't check here regularly, you can PM me with your email address and I can just contact you that way if you like.
