well the west coast Kerry kit is still making its rounds..

my shim tool is ordered, and i will be ordering a starter shim kit this week.

i am debating if i want to let this set become a community kit. it wouldn't be a full Kerry kit, just shim tool and shims.

if anyone would be interested, post here or pm me. we'll figure something out

looks like the bEast coasters aren't into checking our valve clearances? haha

i have ordered all the parts for my shim kit, just waiting for shims to get here. here's what i have; shim tool, feeler gauges, and 5 of each 2.30-2.70(in .05 increments)

i will be holding onto this kit, but am willing to lend it to fellow east coast twinners in need, just let me know :thumb:

I'm willing to support and use an East coast valve kit. Did anyone ever figure out the security of the thing so that it doesn't get ripped off like the last one did? Especially with winter knocking on the door, it's about time for a valve adjustment. How will it work?

steezin_and_wheezin

wasn't much interest before... figure i can make a small kit to lend out- say like 2 shims per size, shim tool, and feelers for anyone looking to do their own work. then you swap shims(the one you take with the one you replaced) and ship it back to me. how's that sound?

If it's not too much trouble that sounds great. The superstore near me has just been authorized a Suzuki dealer, so I could buy shims there, if I wanted to spend $14 each. I figure I'll just do it myself. I even have feeler gauges, just need shims.

First round of my mini Steezin Valve Kit was a major success!!!

Here's a breakdown..

Contents:
2 Shims per size(2.30-2.70 in increments of .05), shim tool, feeler gauges, and a small shim size spreadsheet.

How it works:
I will send you the mini kit, you will take the shims needed and replace with the shims removed from yer bike. Scratch on the spreadsheet what has been removed/replaced. Then you send the mini kit Directly back to me. also a $5 dollar paypal donation to keep the kit in tip top shape

$5 dollar donation:
I decided that a $5 donation would be needed since i would be not only losing my money on shipping, but also i might end up with odd ball shim sizes. I would then use the donations to get a small screwdriver, new magno wand, gasket sealant, etc.. to keep the kit up to date.

PM me if anyone is interested!

Is the valve kit still going around ? I plan on checking my valves soon and would like to get on the list

Need to get mine done as well. Steezin ad me to your list if you would.
Friendly fire, isn't. But it's the most accurate. Semper Fi

I'm holding the Steezin kit up right now. Going to check my 06 and my friends 04, then i'll be sending it out to the next on the list.

I will try to find some time to update this soon.

I'd like to get on the list as well.  How do we do that?  Thanks

Well after the first person on the list, my friends 04, and my 06's valve check/change my invincible shim kit is already showing its flaws. I thought it would be ok, but after a few changes and reading Baltimore's explanation of his kit:

Not to piss on your parade but eventually you would end up with a bunch of shims that are too big for any bike with some miles on it, that's why I now make people buy me whatever shims they use in my kit...

This is going to be the case faster than I had guessed.  Already showing lower numbers of the thinner shims.

If I am to continue with the Steezin Shim Kit, I have 2 options in mind(but am always open to new/different ideas) There will still be $5 dollar fee on both options(to cover my shipping cost) With either of these options you could keep yer old shims or put them back in my kit for $1 trade discount per shim.

1 - After valve check/adjustment you mark on my spreadsheet what's been removed and/or replaced. Once I receive the kit/spreadsheet I'll add up the cost to replace the shims used, and send a paypal invoice for amount needed.

2 - After valve check/adjustment you go buy the replacement shim, and mark on the spreadsheet what was used and that they were replaced with new shim. then send the kit home to me

Let me know if you all have any other ideas!

Add me to the list please! Would be great to have that kit around when I do mine!

I broke out my shimming tools the other day and just happened to start on the correct valve.  The left intake was tight at 2.68, so I picked up a 2.65 and a 2.60.  The 2.68 worked just right on the right intake and the one from the right intake worked just right on the right exhaust  :  )  The left exhaust was just fine from the getgo.  Clean living (doubtful), or lucky?  I'll take whatever it is when it comes my way  :  )  I like to run'em on the loose side of the range...

Is this east coast kit still kicking around? [I'm in the Midwest]  There's 50 pages to this thread now so I'm not fully sure how this whole system works or what the deal is.  It seems like there's been problems in the past so I don't know what procedures are.

I've got a '93 that I'm working on and it started running rough after a fork seal job.  It looks like the proper procedure for tuning is to start by checking the valves [I've never checked them and they could never have been checked] and then work out to the carb.  My instincts tell me to do the carb only because it seems like there's less work involved [and faster, LETS RIDE] but part of me knows that's the lazy way, and I might just need to rip the carbs off and re-tune them if there's a valve clearance issue.

If the kit is tied up [or won't be released 'cause I'm new] is this still feasible to do by buying a feeler gauges and ordering [or trading] the shims after measurements are made?  I could use a touch of advice.  P/M is fine if you don't want to clutter up this thread.

This kit is dead.  It is certainly feasible to get a set of feeler gauges and buy or trade shims. That's how I do it.  GSJack has a picture here somewhere of his bucket-depressing devices.  I do it with two screwdrivers; very similar.

Thanks for the info.  I did find a picture somewhere and it looked like the biggest advantage of the kit is that you have a selection of shims on hand instead of having to wait for them with the bike asploded and out of commission.  Feeler gauges sound cheap and I could probably use a dial/digital caliper anyhow.

Paulcet

I measure and order shims, then button it up and ride while I wait for them.  The valve cover gasket is good for 5-6 (our more if you're really careful) removals before needing replacement.
