I know the stock rear tire is 130/70/17, and I was curious if a 130/90/17 would be ok?  Any ideas?

130/70 and man lives within his means. 130/80 and let the chaos begin. but 130/90 will surely kill him. when will man stop playing god!?!?

Don't know your reason for wanting a 130/90 rear, but I tend to stick with OEM size tires unless there is good reason to do otherwise.  I've always used touring type tires on pre-GS500 bikes to get max milage and got 25-30k miles on Dunlops and 15-20k miles on Metzelers  on my small 400-750cc bikes.  Touring type tires come mostly in the 90 profile sizes.

Tried the touring tires on my 97 GS500 and found the GS wanted to corner much faster than the tires wanted to.     Switched to radials to keep little Suzi happy.  Had a 130/90 ME88 and then a MT90 Dunlop K491 on my 97 GS500 and they fit OK, but stick only OK too.   :(  Raise the rear about 1" higer than OEM.

I bought the 02 GS with about 4k miles on it and it had a 130/90 Kenda rear tire on it.  Used it about 5k miles till I put on the AV45/46 radials this spring.  Dealer put the Kenda on because it was cheap, but it wasn't too bad.  Stuck about as well as the touring tires.
