I'm in the middle of replacing the carbs. on my 89 GS500E with ones I got on EBay from a 93 GS500E.  I noticed in fitting the carbs that there was an additional set of hoses between them.  The additional ones on the 93 are on the air filter side just past the air intakes.  Bases on the fittings they seem like fuel hoses, but what do they do?, and what should they connect to?

Looks like you may have gotten your hands on some CA model carbs... If so, you'll definitely want to rejet before you put those on your bike. I'm sure someone can tell you what to do with the extra hoses, i'm not exactly sure.

Forgot about that.  They did come from San Francisco.  I will try to re-jet them tomorrow.  Thanks.

Items 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the following diagram (from the Haynes manual) are only found on CA models.

Personally?  I would eiither pull the U-shaped tube joining the carbs and cap both inlets, or pull hose #6 off of the U-shaped tube and cap that single inlet.  (Assuming that hose #6 and the U-shaped tube are separate items.)

I have an 89 CA model.  When I got it, the charcoal canister (#5) was already gone.  Surge hose (#3) was not connected to anything.  Purge hose (#6) was plugged by a very rusty screw.  I had long since removed the screw to it and have yet to notice any difference.  :dunno:  Now both my surge and purge hoses are just hanging there connected to nothing.

Without the charcoal canister, I was running stock jet (37.5 pilot, 125 main) for the longest time.  No washer or anything.  A year or so ago I put in 40 pilots.  Everything else is stock (including the ignition).  I don't remember having any problem related to jetting.

HTH.  YMMV.  HAND.

Cheers,
e.

Everyone, thanks for your help.  The descriptions and diagram helped immensely.  For the time being I will switch jets from the 89 carbs to the 93 and leave the hoses dangling.  At first I was worried about fuel spilling if I left them unplugged or unattached.  Thanks again.
