wal-mart oil 10-w40

makes my bike shift like crap...  bought it to flush out any residual magnet particles after recovering from goats syndrome...  it was fine for like 10 miles... then it started to get hard to shift.  I missed second like twice... (got stuck in neutral..)


so time to change it... again... I guess ill try the rotella T 5w-40 or whatever it is... is that okay for near freezing weather (I don't ride if it's below about 36 or 37 degrees.)

Ok check your clutch cable... Thinner oil wont actually do that, might make more noise, might get burnt or used in higher quantity, or leak out faster ... or make shifts clunkier...

yes.. the shifts are clunkier...  im almost sure its the oil.  My clutch cable is a little too loose though... I have to really let the handle out FAR before it starts engaging

Fropm what I recall, automotive oil isnt as tolerant of high-rpm conditions in motorcycle engines, and can foam... I'd use motorcycle specific oil. -_-

but hey, when was the gs motor designed?  like 76? and what kind of oil did they have back then? so if the oil that was available back then didn't work well enough why didn't they design a new motor/ oil?

so what about the rotella t?  the bike says to use 10w-40... but rotella t is like 15w-40 or something... I wont be riding below about 35 degrees or so....  is that okay?

I was using mobil devlac(similar to rotella I think)  15w-40 down to below freezing temps, I just let it warm up a little longer.  Probably not the best for the bike, but i'm not worried at all.  If I planned on riding for more than those couple weeks in sub-freezing temps I would have switched to a 10w-40 or 5w-40.

Yep.

Not meaning to scare you, but since you are recovering from Goat's: Sure that no magnetic particles have found their way into your gearbox?

Speaking about engines designed in 76: Those high-slip additives for auto oil hadn't been as sophisticated back then. So there's still the wet clutch to consider. As a general rule stay away from anything mentioning MoS2 or other solid lubricants.
