Tax on a used bike?

Do you have to pay tax when buying a used bike (when you change registration to your name)?  I should know the answer to this considering I bought my bike used, but I don't remember if what I paid was just for the registration. But I do remember putting the sale price lower for a reason.

Yep.. that's why a lot of sellers will leave the selling price blank for you...

Yup ... tax ... yea... some states dont accept the sale price number, they have a value listed in a book somewhere ... and they tax you based on that ... BUT CA ... yea I pay $100 for all things I bought ...

In Warshington state, a seller can give one "gift" per year.  This exempts the buyer from paying sales tax.

I know its in poor condition, i bought it for 50$ and it had the following issues 150,009 miles, blown head gasket, seized brakes, 5 bad tires, some shorted wires, clogged radiator. and not even a 5 speed, that was an option back then, its only got a 4speed. all 4 corners inside the bed are rusted, holes in rear wheel wells, seat is ripped, rear window leaked bad. 2 50 Gallon bags of leaves in the bed, and so much Bird droppings and Ficus tree berry juice all over it i didnt even know it was black till i opened the drivers door and seen it.



was sitting for over 2 years without being started. would you belive i put a battery in it, aired up the tires with an airtank, cleaned a veiw port on windshield ,side window and rear window and drove it home 10 miles with radiator cap off of it? (problyhelped)

If you can't convince the seller to sell it to you as a "gift", meaning you give him $50 and he writes on the seller's certificate that he sold it to you for a dollar, don't worry about it.  The tax is just a minor percentage of the sale price, which in your case will be about $5(give or take).  You will end up paying more for the title transfer.

In NY there is a form you can have a seller fill out if the 'value' of the item is less than what the DMV says it's worth. I had to do that when I bought my GS. Using KBB or NADA won't do you any good since it will be the DMV who determines how much the vehicle is 'worth'. Just call and ask the DMV or look online for a similar form for your state.

Same in WA.  I had to fill one out when I bought a 325e with a blown engine.  I stated its condition and attached pictures, and they accepted it.

took a few months but got it all fixed for under 250$ and only another 40 for title and tags. runs well but mains are hurt, would like to find a newer 2.4L(z24i) with 5speed to put in. sealed up rear window, now if i can fix the rotting bed, a coat of paint will make this thing look good.
