weird early morning occurrence.

In the morning, as I am firing up the bike for the first time, two puffs of smoke come from the front.  I have a 2004 gs500f.  The first time i saw it, i was alarmed, and i looked under the bike.  i could see two holes on either side where the smoke was coming from. once the bike was running for  a little while, the smoke stopped.  This was not a constant smoking coming from the bike.  This was just a few initial puffs coming out of these obviously stock holes.

It doesn't do it when the bike is hot.  It didn't do it that evening.

I am thinking that this is just a runoff of some sort.

Im somewhat worried, but i dont' know what to do.

The only thing i did differently is change the oil for the first time myself.  There is no oil leaks, nor any dripping.

There is plenty of oil in the bike .

If i had to guess, i would say i put a little too much oil in.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you got a lil oil on the headers. Even if you wipe it off it will still smoke a lil while the headers heat up. Once it burns off then it would stop. Prob. nothing major.

What color is the smoke?  If it's white it could just be condensation evaporating off the engine.  If it's oil burning it has a pretty distinctive smell.

I'm with ponchopirate on this one. I'm curious to know what it was...

Rweimer

you know, now that i think about it, it could very well be condensation.  It has been muggy, foggy, and rainy here these last few days.  It doesn't smell like oil.  Problaby nothing.

another question.   I have put 5k on my bike now, and now it idles right at 1500 rpm.  the book says 1200 rpm.  how important is this difference?

red_phil

1500 RPM isn't too bad unless you sit in traffic at idle a lot.

If you sit in traffic a lot it'll make your fuel economy worse and make your bike more prone to over heating.

On the other hand on cold winter days I tend to up my idle speed to 1500 as at 1200 on a cold morning the bike ain't too happy.

Yep, I raised idle to 1500 when temps dropped below freezing.  But I have some carb mods that make mine run a bit rougher when it's cold.  It may not be necessary on a stock bike.

Wait, where are these two holes that you speak of?

And with that question, scratch busted through the 2000-post barrier.

the holes are on the sides of the engine.  i am not engine savvy, but ill try to take some pictures and get them hosted somewhere.
