Front Tire Chunk

So you blow a tire in a car, maybe you will wreck (probably not) and maybe you'll even die (probably not).. BUT. You blow a tire on a bike, a FRONT tire.. you're pretty much screwed. If you're going fast at all, you're definitely going to dump the bike and then who knows where you'll go.

So here's what I'm looking at.

(bigger images here: https://webspace.utexas.edu/treybrad/www/tire )

What do you think? If it was on my truck I definitely wouldn't care.. but I don't know what to think on the bike. Looks like I just got a piece of gravel in there that came out.. but ?? Just curious if it's something you guys would worry about or if not. Doesn't look like it's horribly deep, but it's not just super shallow either...

Those look kind of like Maxxis ProMaxx.

You might blow a tire, from a big gash, like running into a piece of re-bar end-on.  Even a point puncture may deflate quickly if the object goes in through the lining.  But if it's not leaking air (use soapy water), and the object is gone (root around in the hole with a thin needlenose or tweezers to be sure), then the inner lining isn't punctured.  The inner lining is capable of holding the air in; the rubber just protects the lining from knocks, cuts, rubs and punctures..

So I'd say that unless the object is still embedded in there, or unless you somehow got a second puncture on the same place, then the worst you're likely to see is an air leak.  Check the pressure every day (which you should do anyways).

There are lots of risks when riding.  But I'd bet that if you already check tire pressure everyday, then you'd do more good for yourself by going to a parking lot to practice emergency stops, rather than worrying about that spot on the tire.
You cannot escape our master plan!

hard to blow a motorcycle tire that:

1 isnt over inflated
2 isnt older then the bike
3 didnt have fixaflat or some other flamable compound in it.

ive shreded tires, had em go down fast but never blow out.
its in the main meat of the tire, its likely to be ok

If your that worried about it.

i had a brand new perrelli dragon rear, with 4 inch gash, 1/2 in the middle was a through and through, i ruffed the inside of the hole, patched it, ruffed around that and placed a bigger patch, then put a 17" dirtbike inner tube in it. i ran it till cords showed in midline.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Happiness is like peeing in your pants. Everyone can see, but only you can feel the warmth.

Ok, but if I die I'm blaming you guys

I was thinking it was ok, but better safe than sorry. I've been riding on it for about a week like it is, so I guess I wasn't that worried.. but it's keeping air so hopefully it'll be ok.
