I recently got accepted to MMI, so I will be moving to Phoenix for a little better than a year and a half.
I am still planing to have my bike as my main transport, and am growing VERY concerned about the gs's ability to not blow itself up in consistant 100+ deg heat...

What do you guys think about this?? I really dont want to toast this bike.
Would it be better to sell it and use the $$ to buy an older water cooled 600??

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cal Price

Well done.

If I recall correctly one of the LA or SF guys has posted on overheating saying that he rides eight hours a day pretty much every day and has not had a problem.

Well, the 2004 has an oil cooler, so it might help.  I would also be concerned about the bike overheating.  I used to live there.  It's HOT.  You also have to think about not dying in the heat.  It can get up to 120+ out there.

Dragonfly

I tend to be a very warm blooded person, and do well in the heat.
I havent thought about putting an oil cooler on...

I am a big guy and I ride the Gs HARD! Thats fine around here, in such a tempret climate, but I dunno about down there.

GRU

if you can afford a better bike then go for it.....but if you can't or you really like the gs, just buy a used 04 with the oil cooler

It will stand heat just fine, sacramento's 100 degree days made no impact on mine ... dont get a more $$ bike, that area around MMI has high bike theft ... or is that the whole area ... Not sure some one posted about theft ...
Cool.

Good point on the theft thing!

the bike I am looking at is a late 80's-early 90'sYammer FZR 600.
figured the water cooling might work better.
Im gonna look into adding an oil cooler to it... I could prob make it look pretty nice. Maybe re-jet it a little richer.

I got a few months so I guess Ill figure it out. :dunno:

The Buddha

Ironically jetting it richer will make it run cool yes but will also make it run like crap in exterme heat and that will help you ride it less...  :)
Anycase, jet it for seattle and ride in Phoenix = cool running bike ... anyway OIl cooler and good oil will help too of course ... that oil cooler could be the MMI first assignment.

stupid question......
have you talked to any real shop mechanics......
auto and bike....
compare their $$$$ checks

many auto mechs.....bill over 80 hr/week
most bike mechs..... bill over 30 hr/week

i have met very few bike mechs that can bill 40+ hr
not their fault...industry problems and shitty supply/scheduling

just something to consider.....

If your in stop and go traffic then maybe get something with an oil cooler...other than that forward momentum should do the job fine... :thumb:

bikes were air cooled for....60-70 years.....
traffic is worse than high ambient temp
in traffic you got no air flow...therefore only radiant heat xfer
and it still will live
change oil more often if it concerns you

I dont know about those old FZR 600's, I was looking at getting one a few months ago.  I read up on them and saw some real horror stories about the valves and the transmission, both are basically junk from what I read.
