Noise in 6th

Ok.. here's the deal. Whenever I'm in 6th gear I get an unusual noise coming from the tranny. Doesn't make any noises in any gear except 6th. It becomes more prominent the more you're on the throttle. If you're cruising slow and just give it gas (~4k) it's pretty darn loud. Doesn't compete w/ exhaust noise or anything, but you definitely notice it.

It's done it since I got the bike, bike has 28k mi on it. Sounds just like uhh.. ? Maybe if you were dragging a drum brake that was dirty or something.. Kind of a dragging metallic noise, whrr whrr whrr progressing w/ RPMs. If you pull the clutch or get off the gas, the noise disappears.

Any clues? Doesn't slip or feel rough or anything... I'm just worried one day it'll just seize on me or something.. that'd be no bueno.

We recently had such a case on gs-500.de, and that's what it turned out to be:

phuk, img tag doesn't work. you'll have to link.

Anyway, heavy pitting on the gears was teh cause.

mine makes a different noise in 6th.. kind of a very quiet whirring noise...

yeah, a whirring noise is a good way to describe it. Only, it gets louder than a whirr when you're on the gas hard.

MarkusN - Did you replace the tranny as a choice or did something happen where you were forced to replace it?

That wasn't my bike, I just heard about it through www.gs-500.de.

The owner got that Bike with something like 45000 miles and about 6 pre-owners. It was in terrible shape.

And 6th made that loud noise. So she tore it down with help from a friend. And that's what she found in there. She had the bike up on beer crates for the better part of a month.
