A situation that I see here alot is that people don't know how to host their own images.  Don't worry, I'm not picking on you... just last month I was in your shoes.  I typed "image hosting" in google and about a million items popped up.  I discovered that there are dozens of absolutely free sites that will let you register for free and give you 5 free MB of space to host images.  I use www.onfinite.com  No VISA card # to enter or anything.  It's great.  Cropping tools and everything.

Then when I want to host an image I use the image button they give you the URL to the image you want to show here then type after it.

also www.photobucket.com is an excellent image hosting site, completely free.  they also dont add a logo to your picture or resize it or mess with it in any way.  i love em!

I relied on the kindness of strangers:

Here's a link to a sticky by Kerry, offering to host avatars.  Just send him the pic, he'll resize it if needed, and nothing more to worry about.

Gee ... check out all the red X's in that thread!  Most of them were hosted in my original webspace, and the owners haven't been back to change the URLs to point to the new location.

I dunno, it's sad somehow.  "Where have all the posters gone, long time passing...."
