Ok so im riding the other day and some schmo on the highway decides hes gonna try and kill me lol, so i gun it before the silly man who didnt look into the lane before he moved into it decides to run over me. when i do i look down and my tach stops moving.  :x

well i get home and did a little diagnosing as this happened be4 and it was just the cable came off the engine... not this time its on there solid. i pulled off the cable by the engine and it seems to be in order so i pull the top by the tach off, also seems to be in order, although the end doesnt have a slit in it like the bottom end, i assume that is what its suppose to be like. a second more investigating and OOPS out comes the top end of the inner cable apparantly its been ripped from the inside.. below are some pics... question is do i need to order and entirely new cable and is the top supposed to be just squared off or is it supposed to have a slit like the bottom and the rest is up in the tach instrument panel?

hmm well ill add pics if i can figure out how lol

from what you're describing....

it's time to order a new cable.  this will get you a direct screw on replacement to what you have now. i'm not sure of the cost, but i would say expect to pay around $25 for OEM. if you get the chance, visit a local cycle shop and check the PU or TR books for aftermarket brands to save some cash.

hope it helps!

check out flickr.com, you can put pics there for free and post them here.

I am 5000 miles (8000 km) from my GS now, but IIRC, the cable has two different ends.  The engine side is slit-like, and the tach housing end has a thin and long insert with a square cross-section.

You might not need a new cable.  I had the engine side end piece coming off the inner cable (tightly wound spring-like thing) some miles ago (many miles and many months ago--don't remember exactly).

I cleaned the spring thingie up as it was a little frayed, and reinserted  the end piece in (semi-screwed it, as the spring spiral is somewhat like a screw thread).  Then I crimped it as best as I could with a plier.  (I think that's what I did.  ;) )  Never had a problem since.  I don't recall any gluing or soldering or welding.

The tach housing end might be fixable similarly.  Give it a try before looking for a replacement cable.  If it is fixable, take the opportunity to lube it before reassembly.

Cheers,
e.

cost like $10 bucks for a new one well worth it to me rather then tryingt o fix the thing, the inner coil was ripped apart so it would be difficult to repair

thanks for replies :)
