Idles very high after carb cleaning

I left my GS in storage for a few months and when I went to take it out of storage it started backfiring and rough idling.  I thought "What a great time to take the bike apart and tinker around."  Big mistake.  I removed the carbs and cleaned them per the instructions on gstwin.com.  When I was all done, I started the bike and the rpm's immediately jumped to 6500.  I tried adjusting the idle screw but that didn't do anything.  The real strange part is that when I open the throttle, the bike sounds like it starts choking on gas and the rpms drop to the 2000 range.  I think that the mixture is too rich but I am no expert.  How can I tell what is going on and what can I do to fix it?

I'm no expert either.  I do wonder though, is it rideable?  If you could do some riding, especially at highway speeds, then you can check your plugs to see about general rich/lean.  You might also check to see if there are any air leaks, as that, if I'm not mistaken, can often give you the surging.  You might also check that the choke isn't stuck.  I'm only replying though since I'm up at 8:21 a.m.  Once Srinath wakes up I'm sure you'll get more info.

OK 6500 rpm .... choke stuck on, or throttle stuck open ... I doubt its sucking air ... cos that usually doesn't rev to 6500, ususlly closer to 4K and only after it gets hot. Too rich will make it want to die and drown out and sputter and barely hang on ... you have somehitng stuck open.
So check slides, where is the mic screws set ... and of course you may be having a butterflies that are stuck open ... like on one carb set I recently opened.
Cool.

That sounds almost exactly like what happened after I adjusted my valves. I had to remove the throttle cable to get the valve cover off, and when I re-attatched it, I made it a tiny bit too tight... and the bike idled at 5 grand. Oops.

Try putting a bit more free play in that cable and see what happens. I thought I had plenty, but it wasnt enough... in fact I was over-tight. It certainly cant hurt.
