carb cleaner

Hey everyone,

   I've had my GS for several months now, and it runs great, except for the fact that I can't get it to hold idle. I bought some STP carb cleaner today just for the hell of it to see if it might help my problems. I know this is probably wishful thinking, but hey, for 2.50 how can you lose, right? So now my question is, is it okay to dump this stuff into my fuel tank? I can't imagine it would cause any harm, but wanted to ask first. (I'm new to the whole motorcycle thing) It's a 12 ounce bottle, and somehow I doubt I want to put a whole 12 ounces into my tiny 4 gallon tank (it's a 95). The bottle says, "treats up to 21 gallons." What does everybody think? Thanks a bunch.

No do not put it in the tank ... the tank usually has a little rust ... or a lot of rust ... the tanks have a set of crap chutes on either side ... these will aggravate the rust... now I prefer the yamaha one that goes in with gas into the carbs and you let it sit ... not ride around ... you may be OK draining your carbs, and through the air box filling it in the carbs only ... and letting it sit. These things are rich in methanol whihc loves to make steel rust. Into the carbs, not in the tank is my advice.

Okay, thanks for the advice Srinath. I will not put that stuff in my tank! I'd rather not rust the whole thing out.  You seem to be the carb expert here Srinath, so what would you suggest I do? Like I said before, the bike runs great about about 2 or 3k, below that it's usually pretty good but once in a while it will randomly hesitate when I give at gas, like today I was taking a slow right hand turn from a stop and when I shifted into second and hit the throttle the bike hesitated for a second. Not too good because I was in the maximum lean of the turn at that moment! The bike has a k&N drop in filter, and the V&H ignition advancer. Stock exhaust. It's been rejetted, according to the guy I bought it from. (and I believe it because it really does run great above 3k) It's really in very nice shape actually, just wish I could get the idle to be stable. (and yes, I do know about the screw you can turn to adjust the idle. Still can't get it to be stable). Okay, sorry for the long post! Now, what to do with that carb cleaner, since I don't have a car?!

If its all stock, put 40 pilots and 125 mains, 1 #4 washer under each needle and set air screw to 3 turns out. And leave float level stock ... right at the top of the bowl.
