Ok, so I took my frame and a bunch of other parts to the coater today and discovered a potential problem.  The vin number is on some sort of a sticker or something and I was wondering what I should do with that?  Anyone that has powdered thier frame or has any info feel free to chime in, Thanks.

You have numbers cut into the neck as well ... no problem with powder ... just dont tell the guy to black it off with sand blaster, that's all ...
Cool.

He's talking about the steering head.  See the right-most picture on this Haynes manual page.

Your powdercoater should have some self adhesive tape that they can stick over the vin plate(is it a plate or is it stamped directly onto the frame?).  Anyway, the tape is used for just that...keeping the powder from not getting on a specific area.  It is heat proof(to a certain degree) and usually translucent green in color.  They use it over screw threads and whatnot.

Its getting sand blasted so that tape idea wont work.  I should be alright since its stamped into the neck.  Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

Dom

Ask them to put rubber tape over it before they sandblast it...it's self adhesive rubber that the beads bounce off, then ask them to spray a thin coat over the numbers, enough to get full coverage but not so much that it will goop them all up and make them unreadable.

Good points, Ill have to make some phone calls.  Hey since your watching this thread Dom, what were those one studs you used for the exhaust, I think they were off a VW or somethin but I dont remember for sure.

Dom

I stopped at the local B&B(kind of like an Autozone) and they had 'em...didn't have to go to the VW parts store, even though they are the same size as the VW, like an M8 x 1.25  No problems with them as of yet.  Check your local auto parts store, they'll proly have them, otherwise give me a pm and I'll send you some.

Cool, I need to go get some washers for my rejetting fun so Ill look then.  Thanks for the help.

Dom

They might have #4 washers but I bet they won't be stainless.  Those were the hardest for me to find.  End up finding all of the stainless hardware could ever need for my carbs or anything else plus the header studs at an awesome little place in Seattle called Stone Way Hardware.  I bought some extra stainless #4, just let me know if you need 'em.

what are they charging you to get this done??

The quotes that I got for blasting the old paint off and a single powdercoat were anywhere between $250 and $350.

Wheels were $75 each if I did them in black(a common color that powdercoaters do nearly every day) which includes stripping them with a chemical stripper.  You can do that part yourself, just buy a can of Kleen Strip at home depot in a rattle can, they might knock $25 off the price.  They can't blast the wheels because they are aluminium which is too soft, the beads would cause serious pitting and look awful.

Spray the stripper on, let it sit for 20 minutes and the paint will bubble right off.  You might have to scrub some of the paint off or reapply the stripper.  Use 0000 or 000 steel wool.  You can strip your frame in the same manner.  And buy some good gloves that are chemical resistant.  The stripper will make your skin itch like crazy.

I was quoted 50 for the frame, 15 for each wheel, and around 30 for the other accessories Im having done.  Im not sure if that includes labor or not, but I am pretty sure prep work will be added to that.  My coater also is having and outside person do the blasting on the frame and he gets $40 an hour.  So Right now Im gonna say anywhere from 200 to 300.  Ill be sure to let you guys know when I get it back this saturday.

Dom

That's a good deal.  Makes me not like the guys that I got my quotes from.

I got a similar price. Around 100-120 for a frame, wheels he said will be more due to the fact that they need severe blasting ... they are already powdercoated ... Buddha Loves You to get it off, anything you give him that's sorta clean is going to be cheaper. Rusty and shitty and covered with old crappy paint or powder will be $$$ ...
